#BookFaceFriday “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy

I’m glad it’s #BookFaceFriday!

This unflinching memoir of a childhood actor makes for one great #BookFaceFriday! You might have noticed this week’s title from a post earlier this week called Book Club Spotlight. It’s a great way to get to know different titles in the collection that you might not have considered before. Like #1 New York Times Bestseller and a #1 International Bestseller, “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jeannette McCurdy (Simon & Schuster, 2022.) If you use our book club kit service, you know Mackenzie Marrow, our Information Services Technician! Here’s what they had to say about it “I first started the Book Club Spotlight as a way for me to get to know our collection better when I first started here at the Commission. Now it is a way for me to show off our wonderful collection and help book clubs find titles that might be hidden or they wouldn’t think they would like at first glance. When a group is trying to decide what to read next, I want the Spotlight to be a resource where they can browse through and get a real feel for what a title is about and how their group might respond to it rather than just a synopsis.”

We currently have five copies available in our Book Club Kit Collection. It’s also available as an ebook and audiobook in Nebraska OverDrive Libraries.

“McCurdy asks readers a question: When and how does one rid oneself of the cage created by others and walk freely? Her stunning debut offers fierce honesty, empathy for those that contributed to her grief, and insights into the hard-fought attachments and detachments of growing older.”

#BookFaceFriday “The Meaning of Names” by Karen Gettert Shoemaker

It’s a dark and stormy #BookFaceFriday!

This week’s #BookFaceFriday is a past One Book One Nebraska selection, we keep all past OBON book club kits, so if you haven’t read them all now’s your chance! “The Meaning of Names” by Karen Gettert Shoemaker (Red Hen Press, 2015), was the 2016 selection and is a great read for book clubs! This title is also available as an ebook in Nebraska OverDrive Libraries. You can find all of the OBON titles on our Book Club Kits page; just search “One Book One Nebraska” in the Keyword search box. Add it to your to-be-read list today!

“The Meaning of Names… explores exactly that – what message does a simple name convey? How is that meaning twisted during times of trial? Shoemaker presents readers with a simple, realistic cast of characters, a heart-rending story of endurance, and reminds us that both prejudice and forgiveness take many forms.”

#BookFaceFriday “The Rachel Incident” by Caroline O’Donoghue

Don’t turn your back on #BookFaceFriday!

Life (and love) can get complicated, but finding your next great read on Nebraska Overdrive Libraries doesn’t have to be! Find all the new book in our “Latest 500 titles added” collection. One of the titles is “The Rachel Incident” by Caroline O’Donoghue (Diversified Publishing, 2023.) This funny novel about friendship and love in Ireland is available as both an eBook and an Audiobook.

“A college student gets caught in the middle of a friend’s romance in this delightful Irish novel…. This deliciously complex set of entanglements lays the groundwork for the novel… and bring to mind the gossipy 19th-century novels Dr. Byrne might teach in class. But its true joys lie in the tremendously witty characters and their relationships: The real love story of this novel is not between James and Dr. Byrne, or Rachel and her own paramour, but between Rachel and James, whose codependent glee in each other’s company will remind many readers of their own college friendships, especially those between women and queer men…. Sensational.”

#BookFaceFriday “How to Find Love in a Bookshop” by Veronica Henry

Love in the time of #BookFace!

We can’t help it, we’re a little partial to Bookstores and this week’s #BookFaceFriday! Described as “A love letter to books and the shops that sell them,” we thought this week’s title was a perfect fit for one of our favorite local bookshops! “How to Find Love in a Bookshop: A Novel” by Veronica Henry (‎Penguin Books, 2018) is available as a Book Club Kit as well as an ebook and audiobook in Nebraska OverDrive Libraries.

“Henry describes her novel as an ode to bookshops, and it is that. . . Readers who laughed and cried over Gabrielle Zevin’s The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry and Fredrik Backman’s A Man Called Ove will love this one.”

“Garmus tells a familiar story in a completely original voice in her delightful debut novel…Zott is an unforgettable protagonist, logical and literal and utterly herself…The novel deftly mixes comedy and tragedy, with only one very clear villain: the patriarchal culture of mid-20th century America, the days of which are numbered because of women like Zott…For those who admire a confident, bone-dry, and hilarious authorial voice, this novel achieves the difficult task of being both sharply satirical and heartwarming at the same time.”

#BookFaceFriday “Really Good, Actually” by Monica Heisey

There’s no crying in #BookFaceFriday!

Laugh until you cry with this week’s #BookFaceFriday. If ever there was an anti-Valentine’s Day read this one is it. If you love “Bridget Jone’s Diary,” or just belting out “All By Myself” by Celine Dion, I think you’ll enjoy the messy love life in this read. Whatever your Valentine’s Day plans, you can find your next book on Nebraska OverDrive Libraries. Like “Really Good, Actually: A Novel” by Monica Heisey (HarperCollins Publishers, 2023), it’s available as an ebook and an audiobook today.

“Heisey’s portrayal of the joys and pitfalls of online dating will ring true, and Maggie’s self-deprecating, often snarky humor keeps the deeper themes of the story from getting too heavy. It’s a thoroughly modern take on 1990s chick lit, exaggeratedly over the top in the best possible way. Readers will cheer messy Maggie on as she stumbles inelegantly toward a happy, postdivorce life.”

#BookFaceFriday “The Wild Inside” by Jamey Bradbury

This #BookFace is taking a walk on the wild side!

We’re howling at the moon with this week’s #BookFaceFriday. Whether you’re ticking off boxes in a new reading challenge or just looking for your next read, you can find it all on Nebraska OverDrive Libraries. Just like this read that ticks the horror, adventure, and love story boxes, “The Wild Inside: A Novel” by Jamey Bradbury (William Morrow, 2018), it’s available as an ebook and an audiobook today. If you’re trying to read a certain number of books this year, the library is the easiest, most economical, way to make that happen. Even better, you can check out ebooks and audiobooks from Nebraska OverDrive Libraries from anywhere.

“A taut, atmospheric thriller…Jamey Bradbury has crafted a stunning debut full of secrets and hunger, grief and longing. Like the cold of an Alaskan winter, this book chilled me and wrapped me in quiet dread.”

#BookFaceFriday “An Elderly Lady Is Up To No Good” by Helene Tursten

This #BookFaceFriday will leave you in stitches!

Don’t be fooled by the diminutive size of this week’s #BookFace – it’s more than meets the eye. Just like Maud, the tiny octogenarian protagonist of this short story collection, “An Elderly Lady Is Up To No Good: Stories” by Helene Tursten (Soho Press, 2018). All Maud wants is to live in peace in her rent-free apartment, and travel the world as she pleases… but other people just keep getting in her way. If your book group enjoyed the senior sleuths in “The Thursday Murder Club” or the quirky loner in “Eleanor Oliphant is Just Fine”, you may want to check out the misadventures of Maud – but don’t turn your back on her!

You can find this title and all the new books available on our Book Club Kits page; just look in the Browse Options section and select the Browse New Additions link for our latest reads. It is also available as an e-book and audiobook on Nebraska Overdrive Libraries, along with the sequel, “An Elderly Lady Must Not Be Crossed” and many of Helene Tursten’s other books.

“Wickedly fun . . . if you’ve had your fill of gooey, saccharine sweet holiday books or movies, then this collection of vignettes featuring Maud, an eighty-eight year old serial killer, will cure your holiday sugar rush.”

—The Book Review

#BookFaceFriday “The Blood of Flowers” by Anita Amirrezvani

All wrapped up in #BookFaceFriday!

Take a trip with this week’s #BookFace. We are always adding new titles to our book club kits collection, like “The Blood of Flowers: A Novel” by Anita Amirrezvani (Little, Brown and Company, 2007), its ten copies are now available as an NLC Book Club Kit! If your book club enjoyed “The Henna Artist” by Alka Joshi or “Rooftops of Tehran” by Mahbod Seraji we recommend this title for you. This historical novel set in 17th-century Persia came to us via a donation from Kearney Public Library! We love that book clubs around the state regularly donate their books so that more book clubs can read them. So we want to say a big THANK YOU to all those who have sent us donations!

You can find this title and all the new books available on our Book Club Kits page; just look in the Browse Options section and select the Browse New Additions link for our latest reads. It is also available as an e-book and audiobook on Nebraska Overdrive Libraries.

“In Iranian-American Amirrezvani’s lushly orchestrated debut, a comet signals misfortune to the remote 17th-century Persian village where the nameless narrator lives modestly but happily with her parents, both of whom expect to see the 14-year-old married within the year. With journalistic clarity, Amirrezvani describes how to make a carpet knot by knot, and then sell it negotiation by negotiation, guiding readers through workshops and bazaars. Sumptuous imagery and a modern sensibility make this a winning debut.”
