Dolly Parton was not only a music industry icon, but a literary icon as well. One of the biggest legacies she left behind is the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five, no matter their family’s income. If you’re interested in learning more about her life and legacy consider checking out “Ain’t Nobody’s Fool: The Life and Times of Dolly Parton” by Martha Ackmann (St. Martin’s Press, 2025), which is available as an eBook and audiobook on Nebraska OverDrive Libraries. Ackmann is a journalist who writes about women who have changed America. You can find this title, along with Dolly Parton’s own books including two autobiographies, two children’s books, her collaboration with James Patterson, and her cookbook through Nebraska OverDrive.

#BookFaceFriday “Larceny at the Library” by Colleen J. Shogan
Don’t you dare Shush this #BookFaceFriday!
After a swanky evening soiree at the Library of Congress, a body is discovered in the library! What follows is a classic whodunit that will take readers from the inner bowels of the Library of Congress, Ford’s Theatre, the National Portrait Gallery, and the D.C. Public Library. “Larceny at the Library” by Colleen J. Shogan, is the perfect pick for this week, as we’re in D.C. for the National Book Festival this weekend! We were lucky to get to attend an event at the Library of Congress, fingers crossed we don’t find any bodies. This title is available as an eBook through Nebraska OverDrive Libraries, it’s a part of Shogan’s “Washington Whodunit” series. The series consists of eight books, seven of which are available on OverDrive.
Congressional staffer Kit Marshall is excited to attend a historic event displaying the contents of Abraham Lincoln’s pockets the night he was assassinated at the Library of Congress. The next day, a senior librarian is dead and several invaluable artifacts are missing. Kit’s husband Doug discovers the body and immediately becomes a suspect in the death and theft. Kit springs into action once again to figure out who is responsible for the crimes. Her sleuthing takes her to the DC Public Library, the National Portrait Gallery, Ford’s Theatre, and the most ornate, beautiful rooms at the Library of Congress. At the end, Kit must put her own life on the line to retrieve her most valuable possession, which goes unexpectedly missing as she hunts down the killer. —book jacket

#BookFaceFriday “John Adams” by David McCullough
A government of #BookFaces, and not of men.
Start the celebration early for America’s 250th birthday with this week’s #BookFaceFriday, “John Adams” by David McCullough ( Simon & Schuster, 2002). You can find this title as well as McCullough’s “1776” and “The American Spirit” as a book club kit for your library. It’s also available as an Audiobook through Nebraska OverDrive Libraries. Our model this week is a new addition to the Nebraska Library Commission! Welcome to Michael Richey, our new Library Technology Support Specialist. He came here from North Platte, Nebraska where he worked as a Technology Assistant at the North Platte Public Library. It was there that he discovered his passion for working with technology as well as designing and creating things. His favorite types of books are fantasy books, specifically ones that go into depth about the ecology of the fictional world and its inhabitants. His current favorite book is A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan. In his free time he can often be found taking pictures with his camera, playing video games, making things, or whatever other hobby of the week he’s fallen into (which lately has been calligraphy). Welcome aboard Michael!

Happy Juneteenth readers! Explore all the African American stories available on Nebraska OverDrive Libraries, like “Something to Say” by Lisa Moore Ramée (HarperCollins, 2020). Recommended for kids in grades 3-7, this chapter book explores the complex social rules of middle school, overcoming fears, and finding friendship. At eleven years old Jenae doesn’t mind being a loner, but a new kid at school might just change all that, unless they let a class debate ruin it all. #BookFaceFriday “Going Bovine” by Libba Bray
MOOOOve over, it’s #BookFaceFriday!
Don’t have a cow about this week’s #BookfaceFriday. Summer is the perfect time to start a teen/YA bookclub to help keep kids reading and engaged until school starts, because reading for pleasure and not just grades is what makes a lifelong reader. Check out “Going Bovine” by Libba Bray (Ember, 2010), recommended for kids in grades 9-12, is a YA novel that explores the meaning of life, even if it turns out it’s going to be a short one. If you’re a fan of the book to screen pipeline, and you’ve finished Hamnet, Wuthering Heights, and Bridgerton, might I suggest this week’s BookFaceFriday? “The Other Bennet Sister: A Novel” by Janice Hadlow (Macmillian Audio, 2020) is a regency era novel centered on the Jane Austen’s character, Mary Bennet and is now a drama series streaming on BritBox. It’s available as an Audiobook through Nebraska OverDrive Libraries. A tree grows in #BookFaceFriday!
The time is upon us for lounging around with a great summer read, whether that’s on the beach, a hammock in your backyard, poolside, or at the foot of a great big tree. And the NLC book club kit collection has a great list for your book club to pick from. This week’s #BookFace is “The Witch Elm: A Novel” by Tana French, is a classic book club pick.
