#BookFaceFriday “Catfish at the Pump” by Roger Welsch & Linda Welsch

This #BookFaceFriday is a whopper!

This week’s #BookFace is for a very special Nebraska author, known for his pioneer humor and wit, Roger Welsch. We wanted to take the time to highlight his many works in our various collections, like “Catfish at the Pump: Humor and the Frontier” by Roger L. Welsch and Linda K. Welsch (University of Nebraska Press, 1986), available as an NLC Book Club Kit. In total, NLC has eleven of Welsch’s titles in our Book Club Kit Collection. You can also find Welsch’s work through Nebraska OverDrive Libraries, we have copies of “Embracing Fry Bread: Confessions of a Wannabe”, “Why I’m an Only Child and Other Slightly Naughty Plains Folktales”, and “Wyoming Folklore: Reminiscences, Folktales, Beliefs, Customs, and Folk Speech” by Federal Writers’ Project.

“Were our forefathers liars? ‘You bet they were, ‘ says Roger Welsch, ‘and damned fine ones at that.’ From yellowed newspapers, magazines, and forgotten Nebraska Federal Writers’ Project files, well-known folklorist and humorist Welsch has produced a book to be treasured. Here are jokes, anecdotes, legends, tall tales, and lugubriously funny poems about the things that preoccupied the pioneer plainsman: weather extremes; soil quality; food and whiskey; an arkload of animals, including grasshoppers, bed bugs, hoop snakes, the ubiquitous mule, and some mighty big fish.”

from the back cover

TBBS borrowers can request or download several Roger Welsch titles from the National Library Service BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download) website. If you have high-speed internet access, you can download books to your smartphone or tablet, or onto a flash drive for use with your player. You may also contact your reader’s advisor to have the book mailed to you on cartridge.

DB45458 Uncle Smoke Stories: Four Fires in the Big Belly Lodge of the Nehawka
DBC01987 It’s Not the End of the Earth, but You Can See It from Here: Tales of the Great Plains

#BookFaceFriday: “Today a Woman Went Mad in the Supermarket” by Hilma Wolitzer

We’re just crazy for this #BookFaceFriday!

Well, this just sounds like a regular Tuesday night. This week’s #BookFace title comes from the collection “Best Books of 2021 (Adult Fiction & Nonfiction)” on Nebraska OverDrive Libraries, it’s compiled from various end-of-the-year lists and has 361 eBooks and Audiobooks, including, “Today a Woman Went Mad in the Supermarket: Stories” by Hilma Wolitzer (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2021.) This collection of short stories is available as an eBook.

“[A] sterling and ambushing retrospective collection. . . . [Wolitzer is] an artist with a deceptively light touch, creating stories of psychological and social incisiveness that are at once poised and lacerating. She deftly reveals how women are harshly judged and how women judge, how children are trapped in their parents’ snares and snarls and how they escape. Delectably funny and radically insightful . . . . [Today A Woman Went Mad in the Supermarket is] a striking and enlightening gathering of polestar short stories.”

#BookFaceFriday “Portrait of an Unknown Lady” by María Gainza

This #BookFaceFriday is a work of art!

An air of mystery surrounds this week’s #BookFace. Dive into the world of counterfeit art and forgeries with “Portrait of an Unknown Lady: A Novel” by María Gainza, translated by Thomas Bunstead (Catapult, 2022.) It’s available as an eBook in Nebraska OverDrive Libraries; add it to your holds list today! One woman who is known by all of our book club kit users is this week’s model, Mary Geibel. She’s been staffing our front desk for years, but recently she’s taken a new position as our Library Development Office Specialist, helping our Library Development team with Accreditation and Certification, CE credits, grants, and more. If you get the chance, tell her congratulations!

“A mesmerizing deep dive into the art world through a neo-noir female detective’s quest to find a forger in Buenos Aires . . . Dreamy and atmospheric . . . Portrait of an Unknown Lady, eschewing structure and neat plot convention for vibrant language and a hypnotic voice, complicates rather than clarifies the stories that are told about enigmatic women.”

#BookFaceFriday “The Library at the Edge of the World”

Take the plunge with #BookFaceFriday!

The Nebraska Library Commission is in the process of updating Nebraska’s LSTA state program! This week we welcomed Sally Reed to meet with staff, Commissioners, Regional Systems Directors, and SACL members as she works on our five-year program evaluation. So this week’s #BookFaceFriday is spreading the library love with “The Library at the Edge of the World: A Novel” by Felicity Hayes-McCoy (Harper Perennial, 2017). It’s available as an eBook and Audiobook in the Nebraska OverDrive Libraries. Every five years the Nebraska Library Commission is required to conduct an evaluation of its implementation of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) “Grants to States” program. The LSTA Grants to States Program is a federal program that provides funding to each state based on a population‐driven formula.

“The spot-on descriptions of Ireland’s country roads and expansive sky all but leap off the page and provide the true joy of Hayes-McCoy’s first novel…. Maeve Binchy and Patrick Taylor fans will find much to enjoy.”

#BookFaceFriday “Fried Walleye and Cherry Pie”

There’s nothing like a slice of #BookFaceFriday!

Nebraska Library Commission staff celebrated early with our annual Thanksgiving pot luck this week. Which brought up the question, how early is too early to start researching new recipes or types of food for the big day? So this week’s #BookFaceFriday is a celebration of all things food with, “Fried Walleye and Cherry Pie: Midwestern Writers on Food” edited by Peggy Wolff (University of Nebraska Press, 2013). It’s available as an eBook in the Nebraska OverDrive Libraries. Plus new titles, including recipe books, are added daily to Nebraska Overdrive Libraries!

“With its acres upon acres of cornfields and orchards, the Midwest ought to have some of the country’s best foods. In summer, that’s often true. But as with the rest of America, midwesterners have too often turned their backs on their most flavorful foods in favor of an easy drive-through at a fast-food outlet. This anthology of essays on the Midwest’s best and most unpretentious foods should go a long way toward regaining the respect the heartland’s cuisine ought to enjoy. Jacquelyn Mitchard celebrates the area’s most typical summer fare, sweet corn, especially its marvelous new variety, Mirai. Donna Pierce reminds us that midwestern cuisine owes much to the black migration. Lorna Landvik reveals that the institution of state fairs both enshrined local foodways and introduced novel traditions. The national reach of midwestern culinary art emerges in professional chef Gale Gand’s feature on a Hoosier cheese maker. For regional collections.”

#BookFaceFriday “The Soldier’s Wife” by Margaret Leroy

Hats off on this #BookFaceFriday, we salute you.

As we get ready to celebrate Memorial Day and the start of summer, we wanted to highlight some of the great war and veteran themed titles we have to offer. Titles just like “The Soldier’s Wife” by Margaret Leroy (Hachette Books, 2011) available as both an eBook on Nebraska OverDrive Libraries and in our Book Club Kits. We don’t just offer novels though, Nebraska OverDrive Libraries has a collection of over 500 Nonfiction Military reads for all of those history buffs out there too.

“Leroy’s beautifully rendered tale demonstrates how longing for normalcy during wartime can vanquish, even briefly, distrust and uncover common ground. Highly recommended.”

—Library Journal Starred Review

#BookFaceFriday “Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982” by Cho Nam-Joo

I am #BookFace hear me roar!

Hearing stories by and about different cultures, countries, and people groups is one of the best parts of being a reader. Explore the Nebraska Library Commission’s Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) collections on both Nebraska OverDrive Libraries and in our Book Club Kits. Just one of many titles is “Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982: A Novel” by Cho Nam-Joo, and translated by Jamie Chang (Liveright, 2020) available as an eBook on Nebraska OverDrive!

“The book’s strength lies in how succinctly Cho captures the relentless buildup of sexism and gender discrimination over the course of one woman’s life. . . The story perfectly captures misogynies large and small that will be recognizable to many.”

#BookFaceFriday “Wishtree” by Katherine Applegate

Hey Johnny Appleseed! Check out this week’s #BookFaceFriday!

Is there anything better than a holiday completely dedicated to trees? How about picking up a book and settling down to read under one this Arbor Day? We think this week’s #Bookface, “Wishtree” by Katherine Applegate (Feiwel & Friends, 2017) would be an excellent choice. This Golden Sower Honor book is available on Nebraska OverDrive Libraries as an Ebook and an Audiobook. It’s also a New York Times bestseller and Katherine Applegate is a Newbery Medal-winning author, not too shabby. Do you have a favorite book that features trees? We’d love to hear about it!

“The simplicity of Newbery Medalist Applegate’s graceful novel contrasts powerfully with the prejudice it confronts. Narration comes from Red, an enormous red oak near an elementary school that also serves as a “wishtree” for the neighborhood―once a year, residents deposit wishes in Red’s branches and hollows…. Red’s openhearted voice and generosity of spirit bring perspective gained over centuries of observation. It’s a distinctive call for kindness, delivered by an unforgettable narrator.“–Publishers Weekly
