#BookFaceFriday “Larceny at the Library” by Colleen J. Shogan
Don’t you dare Shush this #BookFaceFriday!
After a swanky evening soiree at the Library of Congress, a body is discovered in the library! What follows is a classic whodunit that will take readers from the inner bowels of the Library of Congress, Ford’s Theatre, the National Portrait Gallery, and the D.C. Public Library. “Larceny at the Library” by Colleen J. Shogan, is the perfect pick for this week, as we’re in D.C. for the National Book Festival this weekend! We were lucky to get to attend an event at the Library of Congress, fingers crossed we don’t find any bodies. This title is available as an eBook through Nebraska OverDrive Libraries, it’s a part of Shogan’s “Washington Whodunit” series. The series consists of eight books, seven of which are available on OverDrive.
Congressional staffer Kit Marshall is excited to attend a historic event displaying the contents of Abraham Lincoln’s pockets the night he was assassinated at the Library of Congress. The next day, a senior librarian is dead and several invaluable artifacts are missing. Kit’s husband Doug discovers the body and immediately becomes a suspect in the death and theft. Kit springs into action once again to figure out who is responsible for the crimes. Her sleuthing takes her to the DC Public Library, the National Portrait Gallery, Ford’s Theatre, and the most ornate, beautiful rooms at the Library of Congress. At the end, Kit must put her own life on the line to retrieve her most valuable possession, which goes unexpectedly missing as she hunts down the killer. —book jacket

There’s nothing more epic than #BookFaceFriday!
Feeling inspired after watching the latest rendition of The Odyssey? Voyage into classic literature and mythology with this week’s #BookfaceFriday. Check out Beowulf by Anonymous

#BookFaceFriday “Mansfield Park” by Jane Austen
Life seems but a quick succession of #BookFaces!
“A large book collection is the best recipe for happiness I ever heard of”… Okay, so the quote is actually “A large income,” not book collection, but for us, that pretty much means the same thing. Our Book Club Kit collection has 2,491 titles, and is bolstered by generous donations from book clubs and libraries across Nebraska. This week’s pick is “Mansfield Park” by Jane Austen, it’s available, along with five other Austen titles in our Book Club Kit collection. “Mansfield Park” is also available as an eBook and Audiobook in Nebraska OverDrive Libraries.
In Mansfield Park, first published in 1814, when the author had reached her full maturity as a novelist, Jane Austen paints some of most witty and perceptive studies of character. Against a genteel country landscape of formal parks and stately homes, the gossipy Mrs Norris becomes a masterful comic creation; the fickle young suitor Henry Crawford provides an unequaled portrait of an unscrupulous young man; and the complexly drawn Fanny Price emerges as one of Jane Austen’s finest achievements–the poor cousin who comes to stay with her wealthy relatives at Mansfield Park and learns how the game of love can too easily turn to folly. More intricately plotted and wider in scope than Austen’s earlier works, Mansfield Park continues to enchant and delight us as a superb example of a great author’s craft.

Wells (The Perfection Form Company, 1979) is a dystopian, post-apocalyptic, science fiction novella about a time traveler’s firsthand account of his journey 800,000 years into the future where he discovers two separate human species. H.G Wells has done an excellent job by describing the minute details about the future earth and making us imagine the world he envisioned. His creativity and attention to detail amazed me. The book was written in the 1890s and yet is still a masterpiece and relevant now.”

#BookFaceFriday “Grant” by Ron Chernow
There’s nothing fictional about this #BookFaceFriday!
With President’s Day this week we took a deep dive into the many presidential or political autobiographies and biographies available in the Nebraska OverDrive collection. This week’s #BookFace, “Grant” by Ron Chernow (Penguin Press, 2017) is hailed as vast and panoramic biography of a complicated man. This nonfiction read is available as an ebook and Audiobook from Nebraska OverDrive Libraries. We also have Chernow’s books about George Washington, Mark Twain, Titan, and his biography of Alexander Hamilton that inspired the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton.”

#BookFaceFriday “Prairie Lotus” by Linda Sue Park
Happy trails it’s #BookFaceFriday!
We hope no one dies of dysentery in this week’s #BookfaceFriday, it’s “Prairie Lotus” by Linda Sue Park (Clarion Books, 2022). Recommended for kids in grades 5-7, is a kids historical fiction novel that explores the hardships and adventures of American frontier life especially for a young half-Asian girl. It’s available as a Book Club Kit from the Nebraska Library Commission, with 10 copies for your reading group to borrow. You can also find “Prairie Lotus” as both an audiobook and eBook through Nebraska OverDrive Libraries: Kids & Teens. Linda Sue Park is an award winning author with a large collection of work, and you can find many of her titles on OverDrive, NLC also has “A Long Walk to Water” and “When My Name was Keoko” available for checkout in our Book Club Kits collection. Friday Reads and #BookFaceFriday – “Taste of Home: The Best Family Feast”
This combo #BookFace & #FridayReads is cooking up a great meal!
It’s that time of year again where we’re cooking big meals for family events, and sometimes that means being brave and trying new recipes. I found a simple solution with easy access to magazines on Nebraska OverDrive Libraries! “Taste of Home” just one of 4,615 English titles now available as an eBook from Nebraska OverDrive Libraries! Magazines do not count against a reader’s checkout limit of 6, and magazine issues may be checked out for 7, 14, or 21 days, depending on your library’s policy. Along with all the English-language titles, you have access to Spanish-language titles, and many other languages including French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Afrikaans, and Italian.
With 50+ recipes to choose from, it’s fun looking for something new to try in the kitchen. The issue has recipes for Thanksgiving classics such as a Favorite Dutch Apple Pie, Foolproof Gravy, and Parker House Rolls, along with some more fun and funky iterations like Oyster Stuffing, Dill Pickle Potato Salad, and Sweet Potato Coconut Pie with Marshmallow Meringue. However my favorite option is the Cinnamon Roll Cheesecake, a delicious looking combination of two of my favorite desserts. With the clear instructions that Taste of Home provides, I’m hoping to make a yummy dessert for my family to share on the holidays.
