#BookFaceFriday “Stormbreaker” by Anthony Horowitz
Saving the world one #BookFace at a time!
It’s Friday, #BookFaceFriday, with “Stormbreaker” by Anthony Horowitz (Philomel Books, 2001), the first book in the The Alex Rider Series, a British Spy novel series for kids. Even better, it’s a brand new addition to the Book Club Collection. We love it when book clubs and libraries donate their book sets to us after they’re done reading, making them available to all the other book clubs across the state. Thanks to the Central Plains Library System, we have ten copies of this title available as your next book club read. You can also find it in eBook and Audiobook format in Nebraska OverDrive Libraries Kids and Teens collection.“Readers will cheer for Alex Rider, the 14-year-old hero of British author Horowitz’s spy thriller (the first in a projected series). When his guardian and uncle, Ian, is mysteriously killed, Alex discovers that his uncle was not the bank vice-president he purported to be, but rather a spy for the British government.”

Friday Reads: “The Maidens: A Novel” by Alex Michaelides
This murder mystery thriller set on the campus of Cambridge University in England fits perfectly in the Dark Academia genre. Group therapist, Mariana is still reeling from a devastating personal loss while trying to put her life back together. When her niece and adopted daughter Zoe calls from university in a panic, telling Mariana that a girl’s body has been found on campus, and her fears that it is her friend Tara. Mariana will be pulled back to Cambridge where she herself is an alumni, where she met her late husband, and where they shared so many tender memories. Mariana feels compelled to try and help solve the mystery of the murder on campus and has her sights set on the enigmatic American professor, Edward Fosca, that she and Zoey believe is the culprit. Sparked by Tara’s last words to Zoe, revealing that she’s been sleeping with a professor and his threats if she doesn’t stay silent about the affair. He’s charismatic and beloved on campus with an almost cult like following by a group of students he privately tutors and who refer to themselves as “The Maidens.” No one is willing to believe Fosca could be responsible and Mariana’s credibility and emotional stability will be called into question as she attempts to prove her suspicions. Intrigue and suspense make this a great read to get lost in if you love themes of Mythology, psychology, and dark twists.

#BookFaceFriday “Breaking Rank” by Kristin D. Randle
Don’t let this #BookFace strong arm you!
Are your younger readers looking for a great book? Let us lend you a (tiny) hand in finding the right title! The Library Commission has a large collection of book club kits for children and young adults. Like this week’s #BookFace ,”Breaking Rank” by Kristen D. Randle (Turtleback Books, 2001), perfect for readers ages 12 and up; it’s a part of our Book Club Kit collection, with thirteen copies available for checkout. Diving into themes of peer pressure and independent thinking, this novel has been compared to The Outsiders, West Side Story, and Romeo and Juliet.
“This novel challenges stereotypes and stigmas when an unprecedented friendship develops between two teens of rival high school groups. “Randle is adept at conveying ingrained prejudices as well as the frustration and alienation that leads some youths to forsake the `straight’ world for a more friendly and accepting one of their own making.”
—Publishers Weekly

#BookFaceFriday “Storm Cursed” by Patricia Briggs
Brace yourself, it’s #BookFaceFriday!
There’s nothing like reading by candlelight, or maybe in this case, by the light of your e-reader. Batten the hatches during the next Nebraska storm with a good book. This week’s #BookFace would be an excellent book to escape into; “Storm Cursed” by Patricia Briggs, is book eleven in Brigg’s Mercy Thompson series. This supernatural shapeshifter series combines adventure, wit, and magic. It’s available as both an eBook and audiobook in Nebraska OverDrive Libraries, along with fourteen other books in the Mercy Thompson series.
“This story brings together a lot of seemingly unrelated plot threads from past novels in a way that feels organic and that doesn’t impede the pacing of the current mystery. Fans of the series will enjoy this solid addition, but new readers might find that there’s too much history to make this story work as an ingress point.” —Publishers Weekly
“Patricia Briggs never fails to deliver an exciting, magic and fable filled suspense story.” – Erin Watt, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Royals series

#BookFaceFriday “Year of Wonders” by Geraldine Brooks
Don’t hold your breath for this #BookFaceFriday!
“Bring out your dead! Bring out your dead!” This week’s #BookFace isn’t exactly a Monty Python comedy but it is all about the plague in 1666 in a small village in England. “Year of Wonders: A Novel” by Pulitzer Prize winning author Geraldine Brooks, is a beautifully written novel, available as a part of our Book Club Kit collection along with three other books written by Geraldine Brooks.
“Plague stories remind us that we cannot manage without community . . . Year of Wonders is a testament to that very notion . . . [The villagers] assume collective responsibility for combating the plague, rather than seeing it as an act of God before which they are powerless.”
—Washington Post
This week’s model is the newest addition to the Talking Book and Braille Services. Welcome, Liz Macias, as TBBS’s Studio and Book Circulation Support. #BookFaceFriday “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” by Maria Semple
You don’t have to go looking for this #BookFaceFriday.
Lighten the mood with this week’s #BookFace, “Where’d You Go, Bernadette: A Novel” by Maria Semple (Back Bay Books, 2013), a hilarious novel about a mother and daughter. It’s available for checkout as an ebook and Audiobook from Nebraska Overdrive Libraries, as part of the curated collection “Have a Laugh: Humorous Reads.” This title is also available as a Book Club Kit; we have thirteen copies available along with discussion questions.
“In her second novel…Semple pieces together a modern-day comic caper full of heart and ingenuity….a compelling composite of a woman’s life-and the way she’s viewed by the many people who share it. As expected from a writer who has written episodes of Arrested Development, the nuances of mundane interactions are brilliantly captured, and the overarching mystery deepens with each page, until the thoroughly satisfying dénouement.”

Friday Reads: Will Trent Novels
I don’t know about you, but I am a sucker for a good book series. I blame my favorite childhood series, because once I find a character I like I just want their story to continue. Lately I’ve been deep into mystery and detective novels, including Karin Slaughter’s Will Trent series, Triptych, Fractured, Undone, and Broken. I’m currently on the fourth book in this twelve book series, and have enjoyed the world and characters that Karin Slaughter has created with character crossovers from her other book series including The Grant County Series.
Set mainly in Atlanta, Karin Slaughter’s Will Trent series begins with Triptych, where you meet Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Special Agent Will Trent and a slew of other characters that will continue throughout the series. Including his hard as nails GBI boss, Amanda Wagner, various childhood acquaintances, and other law enforcement officers. Orphaned as an infant, Will Trent spent his entire childhood as a ward of the state, growing up in group homes and foster care. And for his entire adult life, Trent has been concealing that he is barely able literate. Due to his unconventional childhood, he’s been living with undiagnosed dyslexia, finding creative ways to work around this problem, and keep it a secret. In spite of all this, or perhaps because of it, he’s an observant, thoughtful, and dedicated detective, solving crimes and seeing what others do not.
Now a series on the Hulu streaming service, Will Trent and his dog Betty are out there for everyone, even those non-readers, and it is a great TV show.

#BookFaceFriday “The Orphan Collector” by Ellen Marie Wiseman
Take a seat, it’s #BookFaceFriday!
There’s nothing like the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918 to put those winter sniffles into perspective. Take your mind off of everything and get lost in a good book. Like this week’s BookFace, “The Orphan Collector: A Novel” by Ellen Marie Wiseman (Kensington, 2020), a historical fiction novel about German immigrants in Philadelphia. This title is available as a Book Club Kit for Nebraska libraries to check out, and also as an ebook and an audiobook in Nebraska OverDrive Libraries.
“Readers will not be able to help making comparisons to the COVID-19 pandemic, and how little has changed since 1918. Wiseman has written a touching tale of loss, survival, and perseverance with some light fantastical elements.”

Don’t turn your back on #BookFaceFriday!
Life (and love) can get complicated, but finding your next great read on Nebraska Overdrive Libraries doesn’t have to be! Find all the new book in our “Latest 500 titles added” collection. One of the titles is “The Rachel Incident” by Caroline O’Donoghue (Diversified Publishing, 2023.) This funny novel about friendship and love in Ireland is available as both an eBook and an Audiobook.
“A college student gets caught in the middle of a friend’s romance in this delightful Irish novel…. This deliciously complex set of entanglements lays the groundwork for the novel… and bring to mind the gossipy 19th-century novels Dr. Byrne might teach in class. But its true joys lie in the tremendously witty characters and their relationships: The real love story of this novel is not between James and Dr. Byrne, or Rachel and her own paramour, but between Rachel and James, whose codependent glee in each other’s company will remind many readers of their own college friendships, especially those between women and queer men…. Sensational.”

Described as “A love letter to books and the shops that sell them,” we thought this week’s title was a perfect fit for one of our favorite local bookshops! “How to Find Love in a Bookshop: A Novel” by Veronica Henry (Penguin Books, 2018) is available as a Book Club Kit as well as an ebook and audiobook in Nebraska OverDrive Libraries.
“Henry describes her novel as an ode to bookshops, and it is that. . . Readers who laughed and cried over Gabrielle Zevin’s The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry and Fredrik Backman’s A Man Called Ove will love this one.”

#BookFaceFriday “Red Sky Over Hawaii” by Sara Ackerman
Aloha from #BookFaceFriday!
If only we all could have taken a trip for this week’s #BookFace! Luckily our Library Development Director, Christa Porter, helped us out while at the Western Council of State Libraries Annual Meeting in Honolulu. Even if you can’t go to Hawaii, you can always get away with a good read, like this week’s #BookFaceFriday “Red Sky Over Hawaii: A Novel” by Sara Ackerman (MIRA, 2020.) A historical fiction novel set in Hawaii after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It’s available for checkout as an audiobook or ebook from Nebraska Overdrive Libraries. We actaully have five titles by Sara Ackerman available on Nebraska OverDrive Libraries, check them all out today.
“With effortless prose, Ackerman skillfully navigates the early days of WWII with captivating characters bonded by circumstance. Mystery and magic are woven around Lana and the pages of this book, delivering a beautiful and thoughtful novel that pays tribute to the lore of the islands, their people, and those who stand up for the ones who cannot.”
