#BookFaceFriday – “Humphrey’s Pet Show Panic”
There’s nothing like man’s best friend and #BookFaceFriday!
Now it’s time to hit the books… er, #BookFace. Help your kids unwind and improve their reading skills by letting them read to their favorite pet! “Humphrey’s Pet Show Panic” by Betty G. Birney, illustrated by Priscilla Burris (G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers, 2018) would be a perfect fit. This title comes from our large collection of children’s and young adult books sent to us as review copies from book publishers. When our Children and Young Adult Library Services Coordinator, Sally Snyder, is done with them, the review copies are available for the Library System Directors to distribute to school and public libraries in their systems. Public and school library staff are also welcome to stop by and select some titles for their library collections. We think this one would be a great addition to any library. #BookFace & Friday Reads: “Lovely War” by Julie Berry
I first picked up this book because I was drawn to the cover art and soft, muted color scheme, but also because I’m a sucker for historical fiction. I expected a straight forward period romance, boy meets girl, boy goes to war, there’s pining, an injury, and a happily ever after. Don’t get me wrong, there is some of the expected, but let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised by this novel’s unexpected plot and characters.
It all starts with a torrid affair between gods, Aphrodite and Ares to be exact. Then turns into two love stories the goddess orchestrated during the last World War. The author introduces us to interesting characters from different walks of life, weaving their stories together for the reader. Berry dives in to overlooked parts of World War I history like the roles of black American soldiers, James Reese Europe’s introduction of Jazz to France, and YMCA volunteer work to name a few. I really appreciated the appendix and bibliography included at the end of the book. They let the reader know which parts of the story are factual and expand on those issues. Berry also includes references to nonfiction works that she used, so the reader can keep learning.
This title comes from our large collection of children’s and young adult books sent to us as review copies from book publishers. #BookFaceFriday – “The Case of the Missing Books”
The game is afoot, it’s #BookFaceFriday!
Today we’re solving the mystery of the Nebraska Library Commission’s prodigious book club kit collection. Where do all of those books come from, you may ask? Well, we build our Book Club Kits one or two books at a time, sometimes buying from book sales, but also through donations. Is your library passing the time with some overdue weeding? Before you discard those extra books, take a look at the NLC Book Club Kits list. Increasing the number we have of each title allows us to service larger book clubs or split them between several book clubs at one time. We also accept donations of Children and Young Adult titles for our annual book drive benefiting the Salvation Army, the Center for People in Need, and the People’s City Mission. One such donated book is this week’s title “The Case of the Missing Books” by Ian Sansom (William Morrow Paperbacks, 2007.)

#BookFaceFriday – “This is Not the Tropics”
Aruba, Jamaica, ooh I wanna take ya to #BookFaceFriday!
Since it snowed yesterday in much of Nebraska, this title couldn’t be more right. But unlike the fickle ways of Nebraska weather, NLC Book Club Kits never let you down. The Commission’s Book Club Kit service is still running like clockwork, and sending out titles like “This Is Not the Tropics: Stories” by Nebraska author, Ladette Randolph (University of Wisconsin Press, 2005.) While many library services have changed, we realize your book club groups may be functioning a little differently right now. But with book pick-ups and online group discussions, book clubs are still going strong. Of course with your health in mind, we strongly encourage you to keep any in-person book club meetings to ten people or fewer.

Take your virtual storytime to a whole new level with “Will Giraffe Laugh?” by Hilary Leung (Cartwheel Books, 2019) and a virtual field trip to the zoo. This title comes from our large collection of children’s and young adult books sent to us as review copies from book publishers. When our Children and Young Adult Library Services Coordinator, Sally Snyder, is done with them, the review copies are available for the Library System Directors to distribute to school and public libraries in their systems. Public and school library staff are also welcome to stop by and select some titles for their library collections. We think this one would be a great addition to any library. This week’s #BookFace model is, well, a giraffe. I didn’t get a name, but you can still visit the giraffes at the Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium with their “Do the Zoo at Home” program. #BookFaceFriday “Alexander’s Bridge” by Willa Cather
Sit back and relax, it’s #BookFaceFriday!
You know all those classics you always have to lie about having read? Well now’s your chance to really read them! Nebraska OverDrive Libraries just added a huge selection of classic novels, 1,010 classics including this week’s #BookFaceFriday! “Alexander’s Bridge” (Duke Classics, 2012) by Willa Cather just one of many Cather titles available to all Nebraska OverDrive Libraries in eBook and Audiobook format. 173 libraries across the state share this collection of 16,670 audiobooks and 28,473 eBooks, with new titles added weekly. As an added bonus it includes 130 podcasts that are always available with simultaneous use.
