#BookFaceFriday “On the Road”

We just can’t wait to get on the road again . . .

Passport services at the Library? That’s exactly what we’re talking about in this week’s NCompass Live and #BookFaceFriday! Which made “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac (Penguin Books, 1976) an obvious choice. This title is available to all Nebraska OverDrive Libraries! 173 libraries across the state share this collection of 12,407 audiobooks and 24,143 eBooks, with new titles added weekly. #BookFaceFriday “Rosie’s Glasses”

This week’s #BookFace is all about rocking that perfect pair of specs! “Rosie’s Glasses” by Dave Whamond (Kids Can Press, 2018). It’s a wordless picture book that speaks volumes about learning to find the bright side and beauty in life. This title comes from our large collection of children’s and young adult books sent to us as review copies from book publishers. When our Children and Young Adult Library Services Coordinator, Sally Snyder, is done with them, the review copies are available for the Library System Directors to distribute to school and public libraries in their systems. #BookFaceFriday “Lemons”

When life gives you lemons, we make #BookFace!

NLC’s #BookFaceFriday is joining forces with Nebraska’s Reading Classic Committee! Reading Classics is a statewide competition that promotes and encourages Nebraska Schools to form teams and recognize outstanding young readers. They just launched a friendly #BookFace competition as students await the new 2019-2020 reading list. “Lemons” by Melissa Savage (Yearling, 2018). It’s one of the 10 nominated titles for the 2019-2020 Golden Sower Chapter Books list!

“Nine year old Lemonade Liberty’s mom taught her that when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. Lemonade learns how to make lemonade out of rotten lemons. Those lemons come from losing and leaving everything and moving to a small town of Willow Creek, California with a woolly beast lurking in the woods. The Nebraska Reading Classic Committee chooses books for the reading list for each Division with input from coaches, team members, and many other sources. The list includes award-winning books such as Caldecott, Newbery, Golden Sower, and many other awards. We snapped this week’s #BookFace while members of the committee were discussing titles to add or remove for the 2020 reading list. Specifically the 2019-2020 Golden Sower nominees.

#BookFaceFriday “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn”

I think that I shall never see, a poem lovely as … this #Bookface!

But because there are so many, you just can’t see how beautiful it really is.” Help us celebrate Arbor Day with this week’s #BookFaceFriday! “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith (Harper & Brothers, 1943). This book is a part of our NLC Book Club Kit collection and a great classic for every book club!

This week’s #BookFace model is NLC’s new Cataloging Librarian, Shoshana Patocka! She started at the beginning of April and shared a few fun facts about herself with us!

She collects vintage paint by numbers and old Kodak Brownie cameras (really all things vintage).
Memoirs always draw her in when nothing else will.
She recently came across some of her books from when she was little, a few of which still had the checkout cards and book pockets she’d made for when she was playing library with friends!

#BookFaceFriday “The Good Neighbor”

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood!

It’s a beautiful day for a neighbor with this week’s #BookFaceFriday! If the sight of a red cable knit cardigan brings a smile to your face, and our opening line has a jingle playing in your mind, this is the book for you. “The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers” by Maxwell King (Harry N. Abrams, 2018). It’s a New York Times bestseller and the 2018 Goodreads Choice Award Winner for History & Biography. This book is a part of our NLC Book Club Kit collection and I can’t think of a better way to add some nonfiction to a book club!

What could be more appropriate than this week’s #BookFaceFriday highlighting National Library Week! Celebrate with “Public Library and Other Stories” by Ali Smith (Anchor, 2016). Libraries = Strong Communities is this year’s theme and nothing could be truer. What can you do to help your community celebrate? Get out to your library, sign up for a library card, tell someone what you love about your library, and tell your local library staff how much you appreciate them! It’s that easy. This book is a part of our NLC Book Club Kit collection, and is a great read!

Why are books so very powerful? What do the books we’ve read over our lives—our own personal libraries—make of us? What does the unraveling of our tradition of public libraries, so hard-won but now in jeopardy, say about us?

#BookFaceFriday “Jane Austen: Her Heart Did Whisper”

Jane Austen really knows how to tell it like it is. This week’s #BookFaceFriday is a tribute to this favorite author and all her works. “Jane Austen: Her Heart Did Whisper” by Manuela Santoni (Graphic Universe TM, 2018) is a unique graphic novel for kids and teens introducing them to the life of the author.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a young woman in possession of a keen mind must be in want of a husband . . . This graphic work of historical fiction, translated from the Italian, examines the life of beloved author Jane Austen. The story begins with spreads from the end of Jane’s life as she writes to her sister, Cassandra, remembering their time together as children, progressing into womanhood, and recounting how she cultivated, with the support of her father, her love of reading and writing. The author shows faith in younger readers by including some challenging vocabulary that may have them reaching for dictionaries. However, the illustrations and context clues make the work accessible. #BookFaceFriday continues to celebrate Women’s History Month with Nebraska Book Award-winning author Rebecca Rotert and her literary debut Last Night at the Blue Angel: A Novel” (William Morrow, 2014). This mother-daughter story takes you deep into the 1960s Chicago jazz scene where Naomi and Sophie’s complicated relationship plays out. #BookFaceFriday “Gossamer”

Have you been dreaming of #BookFaceFriday?

I’ve always loved the way Lois Lowry writes. To me, it’s almost lyrical, and the vocabulary she chooses always makes me smile. #BookFace this week is “Gossamer” by Lois Lowry (Yearling, 2008). This book is a part of our NLC Book Club Kit collection, and would be a fantastic choice for any book club!

Nebraska author, Rainbow Rowell delivers with New York Times bestseller “Carry On” by (St. Martin’s Griffin, 2015). This book is a part of our NLC Book Club Kit collection, and is a great choice for any book club!

While we didn’t see any whales off the coast of Puerto Rico, we did take advantage of the beach for this week’s #BookFaceFriday “Songs of the Humpback Whale: A Novel in Five Voices” by Jodi Picoult (Washington Square Press, 1992). This familial drama between a disgruntled wife and her renowned oceanographer husband plays out in a cross country road trip. Get off your therapist’s couch and check out “Running with Scissors: A Memoir” by Augusten Burroughs (Picador, 2003). This New York Times Bestseller is one of those instances where real life is more outlandish than any fictional story. This book is a part of our NLC Book Club Kit collection, and is the perfect selection to get your book club through the winter doldrums!

#BookFaceFriday “Let’s Be Reasonable”

This is a #BookFaceFriday to make Grant Wood proud.

Is there anything more iconic Midwestern than American Gothic? We got the chance to create our own with this week’s #BookFace selection “Let’s Be Reasonable” by Joel Sartore (Unversity of Nebraska Press, 2011). That’s the Nebraska photographer/author himself on the book cover with his wife Kathy. If you’re not familiar with this book of short essays and photography, you should really change that. It’s a must read.

We pulled this from our Talking Book & Braille (TBBS) collection. It was recorded by NLC in 2016, and narrated by Alice Timm. It’s a part of our collection of Nebraska books and publications made available to Nebraska TBBS customers. It was recently added to TBBS’s Duplication on Demand service. You can learn all about the new Duplication on Demand service in next week’s episode of NCompass Live: Talking Books and Duplication on Demand!

Imagine if there were no books on your library shelves, and instead books were custom-made for every patron, printed and conveniently bound together during their visit. You don’t want to miss it! The Celebration, free and open to the public, will feature presentations of the Nebraska Center for the Book’s Mildred Bennett Award, and Jane Geske Award, along with the 2018 Nebraska Book Award winners. There will also be a special presentation by the editors of 2018 One Book One Nebraska selection, “Nebraska Presence: An Anthology of Poetry.”

#BookFaceFriday “What Is Gone”

This week’s Bookface is a smash hit!

#BookFaceFriday is celebrating the Nebraska Book Award winning memoir “What Is Gone” by Amy Knox Brown (Texas Tech University Press, 2017). The author, Amy Knox Brown, will be at the 2018 Celebration of Nebraska Books on December 1st to accept her award and sign books! You don’t want to miss it! The Celebration, free and open to the public, will feature presentations of the Nebraska Center for the Book’s Mildred Bennett Award, and Jane Geske Award, along with the 2018 Nebraska Book Award winners. There will also be a special presentation by the editors of 2018 One Book One Nebraska selection, “Nebraska Presence: An Anthology of Poetry.”

“This book speaks to a current tragedy that will bring up what is yet to be dealt with from the author’s past. The back and forth writing works well in this text and references to life in Lincoln and Omaha are numerous for readers who can easily imagine exactly where events took place. The abduction and murder of Candice Harms is described in gruesome detail beyond what those of us who lived through it remember, and violence against women needs to be highlighted again and again as an ill we have not yet solved in our society. I found Eleanor the perfect antiheroine, hilarious and awkward with a heartbreaking past. The Celebration, free and open to the public, will feature presentations of the Nebraska Center for the Book’s Mildred Bennett Award, and Jane Geske Award, along with the 2018 Nebraska Book Award winners. Toil and Trouble we’re seeing #BookFace double!

Fire burn, and cauldron bubble, we saved the creepiest cover for our Halloween BookFaceFriday! “The Book of Lies” by Teri Terry (Clarion Books, 2017) practically jumped off the shelves as this week’s choice. Suspense, menace, mystery, witchcraft, family secrets, and mistaken identity, are interwoven in this page-turner that will grab and thrill teen readers.
