Throwback Thursday: Dora Lane
Get dressed to the nines this #ThrowbackThursday!
This week’s highlight is a 3″x4″ glass plate negative, bust portrait photograph of Dora Lane from David City, Nebraska. She is wearing a striped, wool suit with velvet trim on the collar and cuffs, white blouse with lace trim and large black hat with ostrich feather trim. She is sitting, holding a handkerchief in one hand.

Throwback Thursday: Team of Horses Plowing
Giddy up #ThrowbackThursday!
This week’s highlight is a black and white stereoscopic photograph on a postcard of a team of horses driven by men. They appear to be plowing. Information printed on item: John Nelson, Commercial Photographer, Ericson, Neb. U.S.A.
This image is owned and published by the Nebraska State Historical Society. They digitized content from the John Nelson and the J. A. Anderson collection. John Nelson came to Nebraska with his parents at the age of seventeen from Sweden. His photographs tell the story of small town life in Nebraska during the first decades of the twentieth century. John A. Anderson was born in Sweden in 1869. He came to Nebraska with his parents and settled in Cherry County. He worked as a civilian photographer for the army at Fort Niobrara (Nebraska) and later worked as a clerk at the Rosebud Reservation (South Dakota) trading post.

Throwback Thursday: Floy Boston and Teddy Bear
Throw on your sunhat this #ThrowbackThursday!
This week’s highlight is a 4″x6″ glass plate negative, portrait photograph of Floy Harriet Boston, taken in 1909 in David City, Nebraska. She is wearing a white dress with gathered skirt, elbow-length sleeves and stand collar, and a white hat with white ribbon surrounding the crown and hanging down the back. She is sitting in silhouette on a bench with a carved back, holding up a stuffed teddy bear. Floy was the daughter of Margaret Patterson and Harvey L. Boston, founder of the Boston Studio in David City, Nebraska. In 1925, she married Aubrey C. Hurlbert. A.C. retired from teaching in 1945 and the Hurlberts moved back to David City where A.C. “Prof” operated the Boston Studio until it was sold to Fred and John McVay in 1973. Floy passed away in 1977.

Throwback Thursday: Agnes and Christina Hilger
It’s a beautiful #ThrowbackThursday!
A 4″x6″ glass plate negative, portrait photograph of Agnes and Christina Hilger, from David City, Nebraska. Agnes and Christina Hilger were the two youngest daughters of John and Florence Hilger. Agnes was born in Missouri, July 1881. Agnes married Allen B. Smith. Christine was born in Missouri, September 23, 1877, and died May 25, 1968, in David City, Nebraska, where she is buried in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Throwback Thursday: Mr. and Mrs. Oren Thayer
Put on your winter coats this #ThrowbackThursday!
This 4″x6″ glass plate negative is full figure portrait photograph of Oren and Tinnie Thayer, from David City, Nebraska. Oren is wearing a three-piece suit with white shirt and knotted tie, a long-haired full-length fur coat with wide collar and a wide-brimmed, felt hat. Tinnie is dressed in a floor-length skirt and white stand-collar blouse, ankle-length, dark wool overcoat with bodice embroidery and wide cuffs on the gathered sleeves with a dark fur collar and fur scarf, wide-brimmed hat with ostrich feather and ribbon trim and black leather gloves, holding a box-style purse.
Oren Mortimer Thayer was born December 4, 1855, in Winnebago, Illinois, to Elbridge & Mary Thayer. He married Mary “Polly” Farrell about 1876. They were divorced about 1905. Oren married Tinnie Belle Van Matre, December 12, 1906, in Schuyler, Nebraska. The photograph is probably their wedding picture. Tinnie was born January 21, 1873 in Illinois. Oren died October 29, 1932, in Dawson County, Nebraska, and Tinnie died January 21, 1934, in Kearney, Nebraska. They are both buried in the David City Cemetery.

Throwback Thursday: Dorothy Rich
It’s time for another #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!
This 4 x 6 glass plate negative is a full-figure portrait photograph of Dorothy Rich, seated at a small wooden table and serving tea to her doll and her stuffed bunny. Dorothy was born May 3rd, 1903 in Nebraska to Riley G. and Georgie A. Rich. Her father worked as a physician in David City, Nebraska.

Throwback Thursday: Ernie Nozicka
Happy #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!
This week, we have a 3″ x 5″ on-site photograph of Ernie Nozicka at his home near Bruno, Nebraska. Ernie was born near Bruno on June 11, 1898, the son of Matej and Frances Smejkla Nozicka. He married Rose Krepcik and after she died in 1972, married Julia Strudl. He farmed northeast of Bruno for 60 years and his place was known as the “Wagon Wheel Farm”. He had over 300 white wagon wheels with fencing lining both sides of the lane to his home and along the main road north of his farm. He started farming with six head of horses and never owned a tractor. In the 1930’s and 1940’s he broke horses for riding and farm work. He supplemented his income by working as the township overseer of Skull Creek. He was also a real estate broker and served on the Bruno School Board. He entertained people with his accordion music for over 75 years and often drove a team of horses or mules with a decorated buggy in local parades.
