Oh give me a home where the #BookFaces roam!
If you enjoy sunsets and long walks on the beach, this week’s #BookFace is for you. Actually, if you you enjoy the Sandhills, settlers literature, and slightly obscure writings of Nebraska authors, then this #Bookface is for you. Check out “Old Jules Country: A Selection from “Old Jules” and Thirty Years of Writing after the Book was Published” by Mari Sandoz (University of Nebraska Press, 1965) which includes selections from six volumes of Sandoz’s Great Plains Series The Beaver Men, Crazy Horse, Cheyenne Autumn, The Buffalo Hunters, The Cattlemen, and Old Jules and from her study of a great people, These Were the Sioux, also included are two essays, “The Lost Sitting Bull” and “The Homestead in Perspective,” a Cheyenne prayer and two sketches unavailable elsewhere—”Snakes” and “Coyotes and Eagles”—complete this collection. This title is part of the Nebraska Publications Clearinghouse, which receives documents every month from all Nebraska state agencies, including the University of Nebraska Press (UNP). UNP books, as well as all Nebraska state documents, are available for checkout by libraries and librarians for their patrons.

Riding out on a horse in a star-spangled rodeo, this week’s #BookFaceFriday is sure to get you in the mood for the Nebraska State Fair or your county rodeo! “Shane” by Jack Schaefer (University of Nebraska Press, 1984) is a classic teen and YA western revolving around the Starrett family and the titular Shane’s arrival on their farm and how he shapes their lives. It’s available as an eBook and audiobook on through Nebraska OverDrive Libraries and is also available as a book club kit through the Nebraska Library Commission. The novel is also part of the Nebraska Publications Clearinghouse, which receives documents every month from all Nebraska state agencies, including the University of Nebraska Press (UNP). #BookFaceFriday “Five Stories” by Willa Cather
We’re among the wild flowers with this #BookFaceFriday!
Is there anything more iconically Midwestern than Willa Cather? We love highlighting Nebraska authors in our NLC collections; this week’s #BookFace selection, “Five Stories” by Willa Cather (Random House, 1956), is available on cartridge and for download on BARD, the Braille and Audio Reading Download service, from our Talking Book & Braille (TBBS) collection. It’s a part of our collection of Nebraska books and publications made available to Nebraska TBBS customers. Originally recorded on cassette by NLC in 1982, and narrated by Peggy Johnson, it was digitized and added to the National Library Service collection in 2023. For our non-TBBS users, we have many Cather titles, as well as biographies and nonfiction titles about the author, available on Nebraska OverDrive Libraries. We also have ten of Willa Cather’s novels available for check out in our Book Club Kit collection.

This week’s #BookFace model is long TBBS narrator Connie Healy! A volunteer with TBBS for over ten years, Connie has narrated more than eleven books and countless magazines in her time with us, including three One Book One Nebraska titles: “Dancing with the Octopus” by Debora Harding, “The Bones of Paradise” by Jonis Agee, and “Prairie Forge” by James J. Kimble. You can find all of the books she’s narrated on the National Library Service website.
TBBS borrowers can request “Five Stories” DBC02016 or download it from the National Library Service BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download) website. If you have high-speed internet access, you can download books to your smartphone or tablet, or onto a flash drive for use with your player. You may also contact your reader’s advisor to have the book mailed to you on cartridge.

Nebraska OverDrive is full of YA, Juvenile, and Children’s books, like this week’s #BookFaceFriday! “Undercover Princess” by Connie Glynn (HarperCollins, 2018) is available to all Nebraska OverDrive Libraries in both eBook and Audiobook format. 173 libraries across the state share this collection of 16,670 audiobooks and 28,473 eBooks. As an added bonus it includes 130 podcasts that are always available with simultaneous use.

Nebraska OverDrive Libraries just added a huge selection of classic novels, 1,010 classics including this week’s #BookFaceFriday! “Alexander’s Bridge” (Duke Classics, 2012) by Willa Cather just one of many Cather titles available to all Nebraska OverDrive Libraries in eBook and Audiobook format. 173 libraries across the state share this collection of 16,670 audiobooks and 28,473 eBooks, with new titles added weekly. As an added bonus it includes 130 podcasts that are always available with simultaneous use.
