Nebraska Learns 2.0: Portable Apps & The Long Tail

Nebraska Learns 2.0 is the Nebraska Library Commission’s ongoing online learning program. It is a self-discovery program which encourages participants to take control of their own learning and to utilize their lifelong learning skills through exploration and PLAY.

Each month, we offer you an opportunity to learn a new Thing (or lesson). You have all month to complete that Thing and receive one CE credit. You may choose which Things to do based on personal interest and time availability If the Thing of the month doesn’t interest you or if you are particularly busy that month, you can skip it.

The Thing for October is: Portable Apps

Many of us are using Web-based applications such as Google Docs, and many are also using apps on their smart phones and tablets. However, there is a third category of mobile apps that I feel fill in the cracks provided by those platforms: portable apps that run from a flash drive or other removable media.

Another facet of Nebraska Learns 2.0 is BookThing. Each month we pick a single title that we feel has relevance to librarianship and/or information theory. Some of the titles will be very obviously related; while others may not seem so on the surface but there is a connection. Your assignment will be to read the book and create a blog post answering some questions about the title.

The BookThing for October is: “The Long Tail” by Chris Anderson

If you are new to Nebraska Learns 2.0, your first assignment is to sign up to participate. This program is open to ALL Nebraska librarians, library staff, library friends, library board members and school media specialists.

Friday Video: Rob Reid

“Rob Reid discusses his new book, Year Zero. Rob is the founder of Listen.com, which created the Rhapsody service, the world’s largest seller of online music until it was eclipsed (rather badly, he’ll admit) by Apple’s iTunes service. He is the author of Year One, a memoir about student life at Harvard Business School, and Architects of the Web, a business history of the Internet. ”

NCompass Live: Tech Talk with Michael Sauers: a conversation with Aaron Stanton of BookLamp.org – Recorded Online Session

On this episode of Tech Talk, Michael will be talking with Aaron Stanton, founder and CEO of BookLamp.org and the Book Genome Project, a technology-based book discovery platform built on computer-derived BookDNA. He will be talking about The Game of Books project that will be launching in October. The Game of Books uses technology, the written word, and our human connections to inspire and engage readers in a way that’s never been possible. Powered by the Book Genome Project and being built in collaboration with librarians, writers, teachers, gamers, and readers, The Game of Books rewards readers for completing literary “Journeys” – earning badges and points by reading books that have rare and unique themes. Played with both physical game pieces, such as bookmarks, and a mobile application that allows readers to scan the barcode of a book to see what badges it contains, The Game engages readers by turning the discovery process into both an exploratory adventure and a modern treasure hunt in the stacks of the Library.

Friday Video: Brooke Gladstone

Brooke Gladstone visits Google’s New York, NY office to discuss her book “The Influencing Machine: Brooke Gladstone on the Media.” This event took place on September 26, 2011 as part of the Authors@Google series.

Nearly one million weekly listeners trust NPR’s Brooke Gladstone to guide them through the distortions and complexities of the modern media. This brilliant radio personality now bursts onto the page as an illustrated character in vivid comics drawn by acclaimed artist Josh Neufeld. The cartoon of Brooke conducts the reader through two millennia of history-from the newspapers in Caesar’s Rome to the penny press of the American Revolution and the manipulations of contemporary journalism. Gladstone’s manifesto debunks the notion that “The Media” is an external force, outside of our control, since we’ve begun directly constructing, filtering, and responding to what we watch and read. With fascinating digressions, sobering anecdotes, and brave analytical wit, The Influencing Machine equips us to be smart, savvy, informed consumers and shapers of the media. It shows that we have met the media and it is us. So now what?

Friday Video: Responsive Web Design for Libraries

Matthew Reidsma:
“I gave a talk Sunday at ALA Annual on Responsive Web Design for libraries. I led off with a discussion of the basics around Responsive Design and how it can benefit your library, and then we spent the next hour walking through how to actually build a responsive site by tackling the elegant http://lollibrary.org website. The video above has a lot of throat clearing and some quiet spots where I got a bit too far away from the mic, but most of it is there.”

NCompass Live: Tech Rodeo Roundup – Recorded Online Session

Come hear participants discuss their experience at the NLC Tech Rodeo, an immersive learning event held as part of the scholarship program administered by the Nebraska Library Commission. Throughout the Rodeo, students had the opportunity to learn more about specific aspects of technology used in libraries by working in groups on projects concerning library-related trends and issues. By learning through doing, participants developed their skills not only with specific hardware and software; they also enhanced their learning skills, and were able to practice some of the “soft” skills — team-building, group dynamics, project management — that are so important in the 21st Century workplace. This event was made possible by a 21st Century Librarian Program grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services.

NCompass Live: Tech Talk with Michael Sauers: An interview with Andrew Blum – Recorded Online Session

In this month’s Tech Talk Michael interviews Andrew Blum, author of Tubes: A Journey to the Center of the Internet our Nebraska Learns 2.0 BookThing for August.

A narrative tour behind the scenes of our everyday lives to see the heart of the Internet itself. When your Internet cable leaves your living room where does it go?

Almost everything about our day-to-day lives—and the broader scheme of human culture—can be found on the Internet. But what is it physically? And where is it really? Our mental map of the network is as blank as the map of the ocean that Columbus carried on his first voyages. The Internet, its material nuts and bolts, is an unexplored territory. Until now. In Tubes, journalist Andrew Blum goes inside the Internet’s physical infrastructure and flips on the lights, revealing an utterly fresh look at the online world we think we know. Tubes combines on-the-ground reporting and lucid explanation into an engaging, mind-bending narrative to help us understand the physical world that underlies our digital lives.

In this monthly feature of NCompass Live, the NLC’s Technology Innovation Librarian, Michael Sauers, will discuss the tech news of the month and share new and exciting tech for your library. There will also be plenty of time in each episode for you to ask your tech questions. So, bring your questions with you, or send them in ahead of time, and Michael will have your answers.
