Who says you can’t learn from history?

NLM LogoThree great topics were recently presented at the Breezing Along with the Regional Medical Library session on July 16. Judi Bergjord, Creighton Health Science Library, along with Chris Carmichael and Madonna Knutson presented their event featuring the NLM Traveling Exhibit – Shakespeare and the Four Humors.   They collaborated with other Creighton faculty/services to provide a lecture on the four humors, a Maypole dance, fortune telling, a soliloquy performance and Renaissance food.   Most inventive and a great way to give some attention to both the Health Science Library and the Reinert undergraduate library.

Further, John Schleicher, Head of Special Collections from UNMC, presented a humor/cartoon collection covering more than 50 years of medical humor.   The times have changed and so have cartoons!

And as another tie-in to History of Medicine, Trenton Boyd presented a fascinating look back on Veterinary History of Medicine, and the collection at the University of Missouri – Columbia.

The session is viewable at:  http://goo.gl/b4kBYj

Nebraska Learns 2.0: Summer Reading & Revolution 2.0

PrintThe Nebraska Learns 2.0 Thing for June is NetGalley.

“Do you love to discover new books? Do you review and recommend books online, in print, for your bookstore, library patrons, blog readers, or classroom? Then you are what we call a “professional reader,” and NetGalley is for you. Registration is free, and allows you to request or be invited to read titles, often advance reading copies, on your favorite device.”

Another facet of Nebraska Learns 2.0 is BookThing. Each month we pick a single title that we feel has relevance to librarianship and/or information theory. Some of the titles will be very obviously related; while others may not seem so on the surface but there is a connection. Your assignment will be to read the book and create a blog post answering some questions about the title.

Revolution-2.0-198x300The BookThing for December is Revolution 2.0: The Power of the People is Greater Than the People in Power by Wael Ghonim.

Nebraska Learns 2.0 (http://nlcblogs.nebraska.gov/nelearns/ ) is the Nebraska Library Commission’s ongoing online learning program. It is a self-discovery program which encourages participants to take control of their own learning and to utilize their lifelong learning skills through exploration and PLAY.

Each month, we offer you an opportunity to learn a new Thing (or lesson). You have all month to complete that Thing and receive one CE credit. You may choose which Things to do based on personal interest and time availability If the Thing of the month doesn’t interest you or if you are particularly busy that month, you can skip it.

If you are new to Nebraska Learns 2.0, your first assignment is to sign up to participate at: http://nlcblogs.nebraska.gov/nelearns/sign-up-2/ This program is open to ALL Nebraska librarians, library staff, library friends, library board members and school media specialists.

We hope you’ll join your library colleagues in the fun as you learn about new and exciting technologies!

Huyen-Yen Hoang, La Vista Library Board President At 16 Years Old

Huyen-Yen-1Teen librarian Lindsey Tomsu has some amazing kids involved with her teen advisory board. One young lady stepped up to the challenge when a spot opened up on the La Vista Public Library board in Nebraska. Huyen-Yen Hoang put in her application, and before she knew it, the board was naming her as the president.

How did you first become involved with La Vista (NE) Public Library?

I first got involved with the La Vista Public Library in the summer of 2005. My first grade teacher had given all her students calendars of things we should do so that we wouldn’t get bored. One day, it said, “Register for the Summer Reading Program,” and so upon doing so, I was so intrigued, I came back every year. Although, I didn’t actively help out until the summer of 2010 when I discovered the newly developed teen program and joined the TAB (teen advisory board).

A follow-up on The Quantified Self

On the last Tech Talk episode of NCompass Live I spoke with Gary Wolf one of the co-founders of The Quantified Self. For those interested in hearing a little more, and a bit of a counter-argument to the concept, take a listen to this episode of the CBC Spark podcast. The whole episode is very interesting but the QS stories don’t start until 25:30.

Nebraska Librarians @ SXSW

3d printAUSTIN (February 5, 2014) – Representatives from the library industry’s leading organizations and associations are attending SXSW Interactive to raise awareness of the ways librarians are already supporting emerging entrepreneurs and tech businesses across the country. The goal is to get more entrepreneurs to recognize how librarians can help them scale their businesses. Through the support of Innovative, the leading provider of technology solutions and services to libraries, these organizations will be represented at the Innovative booth for libraries (#1036) during the SXSW Trade Show.

Librarians For Open Data and Civic Hacking

Rebecca Stavick, staff development specialist at Omaha Public Library, is one of the four founders of Open Nebraska, a citizen-led organization dedicated to pushing the open data movement in Nebraska. Open Nebraska’s mission is to solve community problems through civic application development, open data advocacy and tech education. The group organized Hack Omaha, a weekend hackathon they hosted in November 2013, which attracted around 30 participants. Stavick contends there are so many elements of civic hacking that are a direct reflection of librarianship. The library, she says, is one of the few places with the space and the Internet access that makes these types of events possible.

“Lack of access to local data is of direct concern to libraries. If libraries are supposed to provide open access to information, then any kind of public data would fall within that realm,” says Stavick. “Curating local information so that it’s more accessible to the public is a common goal of both librarians and civic hackers, with the intended result of informing citizens so they can make their own decisions.”

Open Nebraska is launching Hack Lincoln, the first-ever civic hackathon in Lincoln, Neb., this March and is aiming to plan another hackathon around National Civic Hacking Day in June.

Nebraska Learns 2.0: Photosynths and The Writing on the Wall

The Nebraska Learns 2.0 Thing for February is Photosynths.

This month we’re going to take another look at photography but with a bit of a twist: Photosynths.

Photosynths are a technology from Microsoft that takes a collection of photos and combines them into a pseudo-3D experience. There are four types you can create: Spin, Walk, Wall & Panorama.

Another facet of Nebraska Learns 2.0 is BookThing. Each month we pick a single title that we feel has relevance to librarianship and/or information theory. Some of the titles will be very obviously related, while others may not seem so on the surface but there is a connection. Your assignment will be to read the book and create a blog post answering some questions about the title.

The BookThing for February is Writing on the Wall: Social Media, the First 2,000 Years by Tom Stangage.

Papyrus rolls and Twitter have much in common, as each was their generation’s signature means of “instant” communication. Indeed, as Tom Standage reveals in his scintillating new book, social media is anything but a new phenomenon.

Nebraska Learns 2.0 is the Nebraska Library Commission’s ongoing online learning CarhengeCrop5program.

If you are new to Nebraska Learns 2.0, your first assignment is to sign up to participate. This program is open to ALL Nebraska librarians, library staff, library friends, library board members and school media specialists.

We hope you’ll join your library colleagues in the fun as you learn about new and exciting technologies!
