Throwback Thursday: 1911 Basketball Team
Basketball season in Nebraska is underway and we’re celebrating with this week’s #ThrowbackThursday!
This week, we have a black and white photograph featuring the 1911 basketball team at Nebraska Normal College, now known as Wayne State College. Wayne State College is one of three state colleges in Nebraska and the institution held its first session on September 19, 1910.
This image is published and owned by Wayne State College. In a continuing effort to preserve and make accessible photographs depicting the history of Wayne State College and the region it serves, the Wayne State College Library has digitized selected photographs from its archives. Included in this collection are photographs from the early 1900s that show the buildings and grounds of the campus, athletic teams, the Student Army Training Corps, and others.

Throwback Thursday: Bunker Hill Baseball Team
Happy #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!
This black and white photograph shows the 1952 players on the Bunker Hill Baseball Team. Home games were played on the Brownson baseball field that was located seven miles west of Sidney, Nebraska. The players on this team came from five different precincts: Bunker Hill, Potter, Gurley, Dalton, and Brownson.
This week’s photograph is published and owned by the Cheyenne County Historical Society and Museum. Items in this collection represent the people and places of Sidney, Fort Sidney, Potter, Dalton, and other communities and sites in the county.

Throwback Thursday: Basketball Players Putting on Makeup
Basketball season is in full swing and we’re celebrating with this week’s #ThrowbackThursday!
In this week’s 8″ x 10″ black and white acetate negative, we have two young women, in basketball uniforms, putting on makeup. This image was taken by William Wentworth in the early-to-mid 1900s. He worked as both a freelancer and a commercial photographer, providing a unique view of architecture, businesses, and community life in Omaha.
This image is owned and published by The Durham Museum. This collection consists of 4663 negatives of images that document life in Omaha, Nebraska from 1934 through 1950. Check it out on the Nebraska Memories archive!

Throwback Thursday: Crowd at a Football Game 1915

This week, we have a 5 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ black and white photo of a crowd sitting on the bleachers at a football game at the Nebraska Normal School at Kearney.
This picture was created by John A. Stryker. It is published and owned by the Calvin T. Ryan Library at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. UNK was founded in 1905 as the Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney. It became Nebraska State Teachers College in 1921 and renamed as Kearney State College in 1963. In 1991, it joined the Nebraska University system. The images featured in this collection show faculty, students, buildings, and activities during the school’s early existence.

Throwback Thursday: Girls Gymnastics Class
Happy #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!
This week, we have a black and white photograph of a girls gymnastics class at Omaha Central High School. This is one of series of photographs taken of the interior of the newly completed high school building in 1912. The building was constructed over a 12-year period to replace the original 1872 structure. The Omaha Central High School building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
The girls in this photograph are wearing gym clothing typical of the time. A note from the 1913 Omaha Public School Annual report on Physical Training stated: “This department employs 2 teachers, one of whom gives her whole time and the other three fifths of her time to this work. There are enrolled 302 girls. The work is optional and may continued for four years. The aim is first of all corrective, then recreative, then for the development of skills, bodily poise and graceful carriage.”
This image is part of the Omaha Public School Archive Collection. Historical materials relating directly to the Omaha Public Schools have been located in various departments and school buildings. Many schools still maintain their own collections. In 2003, staff from the Educational Research Library / Library Services received a small grant to begin collecting and organizing these materials in a central location. This group of pictures and their accompanying stories is but a tiny part of the District’s over 150 year history.

Throwback Thursday: Track Team Castelar School
It’s Thursday and you know what that means…#Throwback!
This week, we have a team portrait of the track team at Castelar School. In June of 1912, this team competed in the first Omaha Public School track meet to be held outside. 420 boys from 30 different schools participated in the meet.
This image is owned and published by Omaha Public Schools and the Education Research Library. Historical materials relating to the Omaha Public Schools have been located in various departments and school buildings. In 2003, staff from the Educational Research Library/Library Services received a small grant to begin collecting and organizing these materials into one central location. This group of pictures and their accompanying stories is only a small part of the District’s long history.

Baseball is season is officially here and we’re celebrating with this week’s #ThrowbackThursday!
This week, we have a 5-3/8″ x 2-1/2″ black and white photograph of a student at Union College running to first base. This image is published and owned by the Ella Johnson Crandall Memorial Library at Union College. The library is home to an archival collection of books, periodicals, audiovisual materials, photographs, artifacts, and manuscript collections related to the history of Union college and the College View community. The photographs selected for inclusion in Nebraska Memories include early scenes of the Union College campus and downtown College View.

Get your fat pants on and get ready to yell at the TV! It’s a football #BookFaceFriday!
Today, all across the state, families will get out the Thanksgiving leftovers and settle in to watch some football! And for those of you who aren’t, may we suggest settling in with a good book, like “Sport, Philosophy, and Good Lives” by Randolph Feezell (University of Nebraska Press, 2013.) The author is a professor of philosophy at Creighton University, who posits, “There’s more to sports than the ethos of competition, entertainment, and commercialism.” As part of our permanent collection, it’s available for check out to anyone. Just ask our amazing Information Services staff! This title is published by the University of Nebraska Press, which we collect from for our state document program.

Throwback Thursday: Football game near Old Main
Happy Thanksgiving! Let’s celebrate with a 1907 Thanksgiving #ThrowbackThursday!
Back in 1907, fans and spectators gathered to watch Nebraska State Normal School (NSNS) at Kearney play Doane College in a Thanksgiving day football game. In this 5-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ black and white postcard, we can see the two football teams facing off, a group of spectators standing against a tall wooden plank fence, and in the background, the NSNS Administration Building. Written at the bottom of the card is: “Doan Colage and Kearney State Normal, Thanksgiving ’07 By SD Butcher & Son”.
