Throwback Thursday: 1906 Football Team
It’s football season #ThrowbackThursday!
This 9-1/2″ x 7-1/4″ black and white photograph shows the Nebraska State Normal School football team at Kearney, in 1906. It shows sixteen men, most wearing football apparel. One of the seated players holds a football marked ’06 and a white dog in the lap of another. This team compiled a record of 3-4-2 on the season, scoring a total of 28 points. The coach was Wynfred E. Allen.

UNK was founded in 1905 as the Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney, became Nebraska State Teachers College in 1921, was renamed Kearney State College in 1963, and joined the Nebraska University system in 1991. The collection shows faculty, students, buildings and activities from the first dozen years of the school’s existence.

Throwback Thursday: A.O. Thomas Residence
Happy #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!
This week, we have a 5″ x 3-1/2″ black and white photograph showing a large, two story house that belonged to Augustus Orloff Thomas. He served as the first President of Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney. This home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and has been remodeled several times. Now, it serves as the Alumni House.

Throwback Thursday: Summer School
It’s time for another #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!
Pictured in this week’s #Throwback are some students attending Summer School at the Nebraska State School at Kearney in the early 1900s. The school was founded in 1905. In 1921, it became Nebraska State Teachers college and then renamed to Kearney State College in 1963. The institution joined the Nebraska University system in 1991.

This picture was created by John A. Stryker. It is published and owned by the Calvin T. Ryan Library at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. UNK was founded in 1905 as the Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney. It became Nebraska State Teachers College in 1921 and renamed as Kearney State College in 1963. In 1991, it joined the Nebraska University system. The images featured in this collection show faculty, students, buildings, and activities during the school’s early existence.

This week, we have a 5 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ black and white photograph of the athletic field and grandstand at the Nebraska State Normal School in Kearney. The grandstand, built in 1906, is filled with people while other spectators sit in cars to watch a baseball game in 1915.

This picture from 1909 shows the Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney posed on Central Avenue in Kearney, Nebraska. Founded in 1905, the school was renamed to Nebraska State Teachers College in 1921 and then renamed again in 1963 to Kearney State College. In 1991, the college joined the Nebraska University system.

Throwback Thursday: Football game near Old Main
Happy Thanksgiving! Let’s celebrate with a 1907 Thanksgiving #ThrowbackThursday!
Back in 1907, fans and spectators gathered to watch Nebraska State Normal School (NSNS) at Kearney play Doane College in a Thanksgiving day football game. In this 5-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ black and white postcard, we can see the two football teams facing off, a group of spectators standing against a tall wooden plank fence, and in the background, the NSNS Administration Building. Written at the bottom of the card is: “Doan Colage and Kearney State Normal, Thanksgiving ’07 By SD Butcher & Son”.
