#BookFaceFriday “Chasing Bright Medusas” by Benjamin Taylor
O #BookfaceFriday!
This week’s BookFace is brand new to our collection! Next week, December 7th, we’ll be celebrating Willa Cather’s 150th birthday. What better way to get the party started than with highlighting all of Cather’s works, as well as nonfiction titles about Willa Cather, like “Chasing Bright Medusas: A Life of Willa Cather” by Benjamin Taylor (Viking, 2023.) This title is available as an eBook and Audiobook on Nebraska Overdrive Libraries, we also have several of Cather’s books on Nebraska Overdrive Libraries, including My Ántonia, Death Comes for the Archbishop, and Song of the Lark. NLC also has nine of Willa Cather’s books available as Book Club Kits. Let us know your favorite book by or about Willa Cather as we celebrate one of Nebraska’s most treasured authors.
“…Taylor provides a remarkably revealing account of the life and creative output of Willa Cather…Taylor’s connection of Cather’s personal life and her literary inventions is consistently astute, and the exuberant force of her imagination emerges vividly…the author presents a rewarding and perceptive portrait, providing a valuable assessment of Cather’s intriguing character and the enduring importance of her oeuvre. Keen, insightful commentary on a literary master.”
— Kirkus Reviews

Kay Goerhing, our Senior Readers Services Advisor with the Talking Book & Braille Service, is a 44 year veteran of the Library Commission, and will be truly missed by staff and patrons alike. #BookFaceFriday “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy
I’m glad it’s #BookFaceFriday!
This unflinching memoir of a childhood actor makes for one great #BookFaceFriday! You might have noticed this week’s title from a post earlier this week called Book Club Spotlight. It’s a great way to get to know different titles in the collection that you might not have considered before. Like #1 New York Times Bestseller and a #1 International Bestseller, “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jeannette McCurdy (Simon & Schuster, 2022.) If you use our book club kit service, you know Mackenzie Marrow, our Information Services Technician! Here’s what they had to say about it “I first started the Book Club Spotlight as a way for me to get to know our collection better when I first started here at the Commission. Now it is a way for me to show off our wonderful collection and help book clubs find titles that might be hidden or they wouldn’t think they would like at first glance. When a group is trying to decide what to read next, I want the Spotlight to be a resource where they can browse through and get a real feel for what a title is about and how their group might respond to it rather than just a synopsis.”
We currently have five copies available in our Book Club Kit Collection. It’s also available as an ebook and audiobook in Nebraska OverDrive Libraries.
“McCurdy asks readers a question: When and how does one rid oneself of the cage created by others and walk freely? Her stunning debut offers fierce honesty, empathy for those that contributed to her grief, and insights into the hard-fought attachments and detachments of growing older.”

Shoemaker presents readers with a simple, realistic cast of characters, a heart-rending story of endurance, and reminds us that both prejudice and forgiveness take many forms.”

#BookFaceFriday “The Rachel Incident” by Caroline O’Donoghue
Don’t turn your back on #BookFaceFriday!
Life (and love) can get complicated, but finding your next great read on Nebraska Overdrive Libraries doesn’t have to be! Find all the new book in our “Latest 500 titles added” collection. One of the titles is “The Rachel Incident” by Caroline O’Donoghue (Diversified Publishing, 2023.) This funny novel about friendship and love in Ireland is available as both an eBook and an Audiobook.
“A college student gets caught in the middle of a friend’s romance in this delightful Irish novel…. This deliciously complex set of entanglements lays the groundwork for the novel… and bring to mind the gossipy 19th-century novels Dr. Byrne might teach in class. But its true joys lie in the tremendously witty characters and their relationships: The real love story of this novel is not between James and Dr. Byrne, or Rachel and her own paramour, but between Rachel and James, whose codependent glee in each other’s company will remind many readers of their own college friendships, especially those between women and queer men…. Sensational.”

#BookFaceFriday “How to Find Love in a Bookshop” by Veronica Henry
Love in the time of #BookFace!
We can’t help it, we’re a little partial to Bookstores and this week’s #BookFaceFriday! Described as “A love letter to books and the shops that sell them,” we thought this week’s title was a perfect fit for one of our favorite local bookshops! “How to Find Love in a Bookshop: A Novel” by Veronica Henry (Penguin Books, 2018) is available as a Book Club Kit as well as an ebook and audiobook in Nebraska OverDrive Libraries.
“Henry describes her novel as an ode to bookshops, and it is that. . . Readers who laughed and cried over Gabrielle Zevin’s The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry and Fredrik Backman’s A Man Called Ove will love this one.”

“Garmus tells a familiar story in a completely original voice in her delightful debut novel…Zott is an unforgettable protagonist, logical and literal and utterly herself…The novel deftly mixes comedy and tragedy, with only one very clear villain: the patriarchal culture of mid-20th century America, the days of which are numbered because of women like Zott…For those who admire a confident, bone-dry, and hilarious authorial voice, this novel achieves the difficult task of being both sharply satirical and heartwarming at the same time.”

#BookFaceFriday “The Woman in the Library” by Sulari Gentill
Shhhh! This is a #BookFaceFriday!
Happy National Library Week! We pretty much consider every week Library Week, but here’s a special #BookFace just for you. We have curated all the library-themed books into one place, the “Library Love: Stories centered around the library/librarians” collection on Nebraska OverDrive Libraries. One of the titles is “The Woman in the Library” by Sulari Gentill (Poisoned Pen Press, 2022.) This thrilling murder mystery is available as both an eBook and an Audiobook.
“Ned Kelly Award winner Gentill (Crossing the Lines) presents a complex, riveting story within a story. The fictional story of an author writing about another writer with messy, complicated friendships and suspicion is an innovative literary mystery.”
―Library Journal (Starred Review)

#BookFaceFriday “The Dearly Beloved” by Cara Wall
We are gathered here today for #BookFaceFriday!
This week’s #BookFace is brand new to our collection and would make a great book club read! We so appreciate when libraries donate their book club reads to us so we can share them with all of you! One of those recently donated titles is “The Dearly Beloved: A Novel” by Cara Wall (Simon & Schuster, 2019), gifted to us by the Kearney Public Library! This title is also available as an ebook in Nebraska OverDrive Libraries. You can find this title and all the new books available on our Book Club Kits page; just look in the Browse Options section and select the Browse New Additions link for our latest reads. Add it to your to-be-read list today!
“Underlying the very readable, honestly human propulsion of her characters’ lives in their near-entirety, Wall does a tricky thing quite well, exploring the facts of faith and love at both their most exalting and most trying.”
