Continuing Education & Training Grants: Applications Open!
Continuing Education & Training grants help assist Nebraska libraries to improve the library services provided to their communities through continuing education and training for their library personnel and supporters. Successful applications will show how the continuing education and/or training proposed will support the library’s mission.
For this second round of CE Grants, we are accepting applications in three different areas: taking an online course, attending an out-of-state professional conference, and other larger continuing education projects for library staff or library board members. These courses/events/projects must be after July 1st.
Continuing Education and Training Grants 2024
Applications and support forms are due May 10, 2024.

United for Libraries: January Learning Live
All Nebraska public libraries are members of United for Libraries through the Statewide Group Membership purchased by the Nebraska Library Commission. The Commission provides this membership to ensure that public library staff members, Friends, Trustees, and Foundations can take advantage of United for Libraries’ services to enhance fundraising, advocacy, and public awareness.
United for Libraries: Learning Live – Standards of Excellence for Library Friends and Foundations

2024 NLC Grants are Open for Applications!
Nebraska Public Libraries and State-run Institutions! Do you have an idea for a program or project you would like to see funded?
The Nebraska Library Commission has made funding available for four grants for 2024: Continuing Education & Training, Internship, Library Improvement, and Youth Grants for Excellence.
Applications are being accepted for all NLC grants right now! Don’t let your library miss out on these opportunities!
Grant applications for all 2024 NLC grants are due November 17, 2023.

Continuing Education & Training grants help assist Nebraska libraries to improve the library services provided to their communities through continuing education and training for their library personnel and supporters. Successful applications will show how the continuing education and/or training proposed will support the library’s mission. There will be two rounds of CE Grants. The first fall grants will open in September and applications will be accepted for events/projects/classes that must be completed before July 1, 2024. The second spring round will open in March and applications will be accepted for events/projects/classes that begin after July 1, 2024.
Internship grants work to introduce high school and college students to the varied and exciting work of Nebraska libraries. The internships are intended to function as a recruitment tool, helping the student to view the library as a viable career opportunity while providing the public library with the finances to provide stipends to the student interns.
Library Improvement grants facilitate growth and development of library programs and services in Nebraska public and institutional libraries, by supplementing local funding with federal funds designated for these purposes.
Youth Grants for Excellence are available specifically for innovative projects for children and young adults in your community. The program encourages creative thinking, risk-taking, and new approaches to enable youth librarians to begin needed programs and try projects which they have been unable to undertake, and to offer an opportunity to expand youth service capabilities in new and different directions.
Basic Skills: Communication – New Course Available!
A new version of the Basic Skills: Communication course is now available!
This course is available as a self-paced online course. You may register and take the course at any time. In this class, we will cover general communication skills, as well as some specialized forms of communications such as advocacy and marketing.
This new Communication course is located in the NLC Niche Academy. In order to register and access the course:

- In the upper-right corner, click the “account” icon (next to where it says “Home”)
- Enter your email and password to sign in or to create a new account
- Click “Create a free account” and fill out the short form
- Click “Create my account”

- Read through the introduction, then click the blue “Begin” button to start the course.
Basic Skills courses are open only to Nebraska residents or those who are employed by a Nebraska library. The Basic Skills courses are sponsored by the Nebraska Library Commission and Nebraska’s Regional Library Systems.
Class participants who are enrolled in the Nebraska Public Librarian Certification program, and who successfully complete the course will earn 2 CE credit hours.

Serials cataloging class registration is now open!
Courses are open only to Nebraska residents or those who are employed by a Nebraska library.
This class provides the basic principles of serials cataloging for original and copy cataloging. Topics will include title changes and when to create a new record, what to edit when working with copy, and how to determine the preferred source for title transcription.
Classes will be held online from August 28th to September 29th. In order to receive credit for the class all assignments must be completed by October 1st AND you must receive a 75%, or above, for the course.
Class participants will access the course website in order to read materials and complete projects and assignments. The class is held asynchronously, which means that participants are not required to be online at any particular time during the five weeks; however, there is a class schedule that participants are expected to follow. The instructor will interact with the participants during the course to offer feedback and provide explanations of the material.
A few days before the class starts, class participants will be sent information about accessing the class.
This class is approved for the NLC Cataloging Certificate Program.
Prerequisite: Library staff with regular usage and knowledge of AACR2/RDA, MARC records, and cataloging. Preferred that the attendee has completed the Understanding Marc/Marc Tutorial course.

Audience: Library staff with some knowledge of AACR2/RDA, MARC records, and cataloging.
This class will be held online from June 5th to July 14th. To receive full credit, participants must complete all assignments and receive an 80% for the class.
Class participants will access the course website to read materials and complete assignments. The class is held asynchronously, which means that participants are not required to be online at any particular time during the five weeks. The instructor will interact with the participants during the course to offer feedback and help clarify the material.
A few days before the class starts, class participants will be sent information about accessing the class.

Cataloging Audio Recordings
**Courses are open only to Nebraska residents or those who are employed by a Nebraska library.**
From vinyl records, 8-track tapes, and cassettes, various forms of audio recordings have been included in library collections. Those who attend this course will learn how to catalog audio recordings, particularly audio books, and music, on cassette or CD.
This class will be held online from October 10th to November 18th In order to receive full credit, all assignments must be completed by November 20th.
Class participants will access the course website in order to read materials, discuss issues in a forum, and complete assignments. The class is held asynchronously, which means that participants are not required to be online at any particular time during the six weeks. The instructor will interact with the participants during the course to offer feedback and provide explanations of the material.
A few days before the class starts, class participants will be sent information about accessing the class.
To receive full credit, participants must complete all assignments AND you must receive a 75%, or above, for the course.
This class is approved for the NLC Cataloging Certification Program.
Prerequisite: Library staff with some knowledge of MARC records and cataloging rules, preferred that the attendee has completed the Understanding Marc course.

Basic Skills 2022 Course Schedule
The course schedule for Basic Skills 2022 is now posted! Registration for the January Communication class is now open until 12/29/21. If you would like to register after that date, please contact me. The class will start on January 3, 2022 and will be open until January 31st. In this class, we will cover general communications skills as well as some specialized forms of communications such as community relations, advocacy and marketing.
