Serials cataloging class registration is now open!
Courses are open only to Nebraska residents or those who are employed by a Nebraska library.
This class provides the basic principles of serials cataloging for original and copy cataloging. Topics will include title changes and when to create a new record, what to edit when working with copy, and how to determine the preferred source for title transcription.
Classes will be held online from August 28th to September 29th. In order to receive credit for the class all assignments must be completed by October 1st AND you must receive a 75%, or above, for the course.
Class participants will access the course website in order to read materials and complete projects and assignments. The class is held asynchronously, which means that participants are not required to be online at any particular time during the five weeks; however, there is a class schedule that participants are expected to follow. The instructor will interact with the participants during the course to offer feedback and provide explanations of the material.
A few days before the class starts, class participants will be sent information about accessing the class.
This class is approved for the NLC Cataloging Certificate Program.
Prerequisite: Library staff with regular usage and knowledge of AACR2/RDA, MARC records, and cataloging. Preferred that the attendee has completed the Understanding Marc/Marc Tutorial course.

Libraries use authority control to manage the names, uniform titles, series titles, and subject headings in their catalogs. Participants in this class will learn what authority control is and why it is needed, how to read a MARC authority record, and how to use the Library of Congress authority file. This class is one of the REQUIRED classes for the NLC Cataloging Certificate program.
Audience: Library staff with some knowledge of AACR2/RDA, MARC records, and cataloging.
This class will be held online from June 5th to July 14th. To receive full credit, participants must complete all assignments and receive an 80% for the class.
Class participants will access the course website to read materials and complete assignments. The class is held asynchronously, which means that participants are not required to be online at any particular time during the five weeks. The instructor will interact with the participants during the course to offer feedback and help clarify the material.

Video materials make up a significant portion of today’s libraries’ collections. Attend this workshop to learn about the cataloging of video recordings in a variety of physical formats, including DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Topics will include series/episodes, cast notes, editions, and access points.
This class will be held online from April 17th to May 19th. To receive full credit, participants must complete all assignments by May 22nd.
Class participants will access the course website to read materials and complete assignments. The class is held asynchronously, which means that participants are not required to be online at any particular time during the five weeks. ALA Announces the 2023 Youth Media Awards!
The Newbery Award winner is Freewater by Amina Luqman-Dawson and three titles were named Newbery Honor Books. This year Freewater also won the Coretta Scott King Author Book Award. The Coretta Scott King Illustrator Book Award is Standing in the Need of Prayer: A Modern Retelling of the Classic Spiritual illustrated by Frank Morrison and written by Carole Boston Weatherford.
The Caldecott Award winner is Hot Dog, illustrated and written by Doug Salati. Four titles were named Caldecott Honor Books. I have not seen Hot Dog yet, but one of the Caldecott Honor Books is Knight Owl illustrated and written by Christopher Denise. This book was the subject of one of my “Friday Reads” posts. From vinyl records, 8-track tapes, and cassettes, various forms of audio recordings have been included in library collections. Those who attend this course will learn how to catalog audio recordings, particularly audio books, and music, on cassette or CD.
This class will be held online from October 10th to November 18th In order to receive full credit, all assignments must be completed by November 20th.
Class participants will access the course website in order to read materials, discuss issues in a forum, and complete assignments. The class is held asynchronously, which means that participants are not required to be online at any particular time during the six weeks. The instructor will interact with the participants during the course to offer feedback and provide explanations of the material.

ALA Announces the 2022 Youth Media Awards!
The Newbery Award winner is The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera, (I have put it on hold at the library). Four titles were named Newbery Honor Books. The Newbery Award is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year.
The Caldecott Award winner is Watercress, illustrated by Jason Chin and written by Andrea Wang, which also won the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature in the picture book category, and was named one of the Newbery Honor Books. I just read it last week! It was heartfelt with amazing illustrations. Four titles were named Caldecott Honor Books.
Nikki Grimes was awarded the Coretta Scott King – Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement, and A. S. King was awarded the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults.
