Throwback Thursday: Crowd at a Football Game 1915
Happy #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!
This week, we have a 5 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ black and white photo of a crowd sitting on the bleachers at a football game at the Nebraska Normal School at Kearney.
This picture was created by John A. Stryker. It is published and owned by the Calvin T. Ryan Library at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. UNK was founded in 1905 as the Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney. It became Nebraska State Teachers College in 1921 and renamed as Kearney State College in 1963. In 1991, it joined the Nebraska University system. The images featured in this collection show faculty, students, buildings, and activities during the school’s early existence.

Throwback Thursday: 1937 David City High School Football Team
Happy #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!
This week, we have an 8″x10″ nitrate negative, full figure portrait photograph of the 1937 David City High School football team, David City, Nebraska. This team was coached by W. Irvin Schwartz and C. E. Dallam.
This image is part of the Boston Studio Project and is owned by the Thorpe Opera House Foundation. The collection consists of over 68,000 negatives that record life in and around David City, Nebraska from 1893 to 1979. Harvey Boston, a professional photographer in David City, owned a portrait studio business from 1893 until his death in 1927. The business was later run by his daughter Edith Boston Proskovec and then by his son-in-law Audrey Hurlbert, before being sold to John and Fred McVay in 1973. Negatives and ledgers describing each photograph are stored at the Hruska Memorial Public Library in David City. Volunteers worked to digitize and describe just over 1,000 images from this collection for the Nebraska Memories project.

Throwback Thursday: Nebraska Football Team, 1897
Nebraska football returns this weekend and we’re celebrating with this week’s #ThrowbackThursday!
This week’s #Throwback features the studio portrait of the 1897 University of Nebraska football team. The school’s first football team played in 1890. The teams were known by various nicknames until the “Cornhuskers” won out.
This image was taken by Alva C. Townsend. It is owned and published by Townsend Studio. Founded in Lincoln, Nebraska, Townsend Studio has been in continuous operation. The studio holds a collection of glass plate and acetate negatives of early Lincoln, residents, state governors, Lincoln mayors, and sports teams.

Throwback Thursday: University of Nebraska Football Team in 1894
Husker football is back and we are celebrating with this week’s #ThrowbackThursday!
The University of Nebraska first played football in 1890. Four years later, in 1894, the team won the conference championship with a 7-2 record. This image of the 1894 champions is owned and published by Townsend Studio. Townsend Studio has been in continuous operation since it was founded. It holds a collection of glass plate and acetate negatives of early Lincoln and early residents.

This postcard from the early 1900’s is provided and owned by History Nebraska. History Nebraska digitized content from the John Nelson collection. His photographs tell the story of small town life in Nebraska during the first decades of the twentieth century.

Throwback Thursday: Football game near Old Main
Happy Thanksgiving! Let’s celebrate with a 1907 Thanksgiving #ThrowbackThursday!
Back in 1907, fans and spectators gathered to watch Nebraska State Normal School (NSNS) at Kearney play Doane College in a Thanksgiving day football game. In this 5-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ black and white postcard, we can see the two football teams facing off, a group of spectators standing against a tall wooden plank fence, and in the background, the NSNS Administration Building. Written at the bottom of the card is: “Doan Colage and Kearney State Normal, Thanksgiving ’07 By SD Butcher & Son”.
