Throwback Thursday: Harriet Fonda and Gordon Reefe in “The Romantic Age” 1927

Its another #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!

This 8.5″ x 11″ black and white photograph of a 19 year old Harriet Fonda and Gordon Reefe seated together in costume for “The Romantic Age” production has the caption “Harriett Fonda and Gordon Reefe in ‘The Romantic Age’ 1927″ overlaid. Harriet is spelled incorrectly (Harriett) in the caption. This is believed to be a copy of a photograph that was recreated at an unknown time with added artwork and captioning for use in an Omaha Community Playhouse celebration or display. “The Romantic Age” was written by A. A. Milne.

Throwback Thursday: “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat”

This #ThrowbackThursday is taking center stage!

This week’s #throwback features a color photograph of six actors in costume of the 1994 Omaha Community Playhouse production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat.” This production was directed by Charles Jones and was produced by The Nebraska Theater Caravan, which is the professional touring wing of the Omaha Community Playhouse.

Throwback Thursday: Damn Yankees

Happy #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!

This week’s #throwback features a black and white publicity photo from the musical “Damn Yankees” written by Richard Adler. This image was captured during the fall of 1964 at the Omaha Community Playhouse. This performance broke the old 9,200-plus attendance record at the Omaha Community Playhouse. The Omaha World-Herald called it “The finest damn musical ever.”

Throwback Thursday: “A Kiss for Cinderella”

Happy #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!

This week, we have an 8″ x 10″ black and white photograph of Henry Fonda and thirteen-year-old Dorothy McGuire in the Omaha Community Playhouse’s production of J. M. Barrie’s “A Kiss for Cinderella”. Henry Fonda debuted on the Omaha Community Playhouse stage in 1925. He returned to Omaha in 1930, specifically to appear in “A Kiss for Cinderella” for which he also designed all of the sets. The production ran from April 28 through May 3, 1930.

Throwback Thursday: Production Discussion of “The Country Girl”

This group, including Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda, and Dorothy McGuire, is discussing the product of “The Country Girl” in 1955. The production was a benefit performance used to raise money for the new Playhouse building.

Throwback Thursday: A Christmas Carol

We’re getting into the Christmas spirit with this week’s #ThrowbackThursday!

This photographic montage shows images from various performances of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at the Omaha Community Playhouse from 1976 to 2005.

The Omaha Community Playhouse put on its first production of “A Christmas Carol” in 1976. It was adapted for the stage by director Charles Jones. For 30 years, the character of Scrooge was played by Dick Boyd. He portrayed the character over 800 times and never missed a performance.

Throwback Thursday: “Driving Miss Daisy,” 1996

Happy #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!

In 1996, Omaha actors John Beasley and Elaine Jabenis starred in the Omaha Community Playhouse presentation of “Driving Miss Daisy.” During the run of performances, John Beasley was called out of town to audition for a role in the movie, “The Apostle” starring Robert Duvall. The Playhouse cancelled the show for one night so that he could go to Georgia for the audition. He won the part, and has since become famous for roles in television series and movies.

This 8.5″ x 11″ black and white photograph is provided and owned by the Omaha Community Playhouse. This collection includes digitized images of the Playhouse and some of its performances. Some of the actors in these images are Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda, and Dorothy McGuire. The Playhouse partnered with a University of Nebraska at Omaha Advanced Cataloging class, with the help of John Seyfarth, to digitize a portion of their extensive collection of photographs and create the metadata records for Nebraska Memories.

Throwback Thursday: Omaha Community Playhouse

Happy #ThrowbackThursday from Nebraska Memories!

This week’s #throwback features an 8.5″ x 11″ black and white glossy photograph of the east side of the Omaha Community Playhouse in 1976.

From 1928 until 1959, the Omaha Community Playhouse occupied a building at 40th & Davenport. In 1959, it moved to a bigger and newly-constructed building at 69th and Cass, where it currently resides. The theater was renovated after a tornado hit in 1975. The renovations resulted in a second story and new glass-fronted lobby.

Throwback Thursday: “A Christmas Carol”

Christmas is right around the corner and we thought this photograph was perfect for this week’s #ThrowbackThursday!

The Omaha Community Playhouse put on its first production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” in 1976. The novella was adapted for the stage by Charles Jones, one of the Playhouse’s directors.
