Nebraska Learns 2.0: Animations & A Classic Look at the Future
Nebraska Learns 2.0 is the Nebraska Library Commission’s ongoing online learning program. It is a self-discovery program which encourages participants to take control of their own learning and to utilize their lifelong learning skills through exploration and PLAY.
Each month, we offer you an opportunity to learn a new Thing (or lesson). You have all month to complete that Thing and receive one CE credit. You may choose which Things to do based on personal interest and time availability. If the Thing of the month doesn’t interest you or if you are particularly busy that month, you can skip it.
* The Thing for March is: WeGIF
Animated GIFs are either an art form or an annoyance, depending on both who you ask and what the content of the image is. In either case you can think of them as digital versions of those cartoon flip-books you created back in school in the corners of your textbooks. This month we’ll be playing with the WeGIF service which allows you to make simple animated GIFs of your own.
Another facet of Nebraska Learns 2.0 is BookThing. Each month we pick a single title that we feel has relevance to librarianship and/or information theory. Some of the titles will be very obviously related; while others may not seem so on the surface but there is a connection. Your assignment will be to read the book and create a blog post answering some questions about the title.
* The BookThing for March is: The Third Wave by Alvin Toffler
If you are new to Nebraska Learns 2.0, your first assignment is to sign up to participate. This program is open to ALL Nebraska librarians, library staff, library friends, library board members and school media specialists.
We hope you’ll join your library colleagues in the fun as you learn about new and exciting technologies!

Friday Video: Are We Hypocrites? Library Ethics and Digital Content
Sarah Houghton, Director San Rafael Public Library San Rafael, California The digital content market for libraries is changing more rapidly than most library professionals can keep up with. Libraries have been in a rush to acquire eBooks and other digital content to meet user demand, often glossing over critical issues: legal limitations such as copyright, contract terms and conditions, and how eBook acquisition and access is affected by library ethics including the ALA Library Bill of Rights. This webinar offers an overview of the evolving notion of content, legal and contract issues to consider when acquiring digital content, how library digital services can be guided by library ethics (such as providing equitable access to information, formats and fair budgeting, challenging censorship, and promoting free access to ideas), and how digital content is shaping the future of libraries.
Update 5/14/2021: Unfortunately, this video is no longer available, due to the demise of BlipTV

Friday Video: Authors at Google: Christopher Bonanos | “Instant:The Story of Polaroid”
“Instant photography at the push of a button!” During the 1960s and ’70s, Polaroid was the coolest technology company on earth. Like Apple, it was an innovation machine that cranked out one must-have product after another. Led by its own visionary genius founder, Edwin Land, Polaroid grew from a 1937 garage start-up into a billion-dollar pop-culture phenomenon. Instant tells the remarkable tale of Land’s one-of-a-kind invention-from Polaroid’s first instant camera to hit the market in 1948, to its meteoric rise in popularity and adoption by artists such as Ansel Adams, Andy Warhol, and Chuck Close, to the company’s dramatic decline into bankruptcy in the late ’90s and its unlikely resurrection in the digital age. Instant is both an inspiring tale of American ingenuity and a cautionary business tale about the perils of companies that lose their creative edge.

Big Talk From Small Libraries is accepting proposals for presentations through this Friday, January 11
You’ve heard about Big Talk—that online conference for and by the people who run small libraries. Why would you submit a proposal to make a presentation? Because small libraries are full of big ideas—and because sharing what you’ve accomplished is not only a chance to strut your stuff, but to inspire others and be inspired as well.
Be proud of what you’re doing, and tell folks about it.
Big Talk From Small Libraries 2013 will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2013 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (CT) via the GoToWebinar online meeting service. Speakers will be able to present their programs from their own desktops.
To send in a proposal, just fill out the simple form (all it asks for is contact info and a short explanation of what you’d like to talk about) at http://nlcblogs.nebraska.gov/bigtalk/call-for-speakers/.
Hope to see you there,
Michael, Christa, and Laura
