Vote for Hartington Public Library!
Hi Everyone,
If you have a Facebook account, than I have a request for you!
Earlier this summer, our library entered a photo in a “The Ugly Book Return Contest.” Kingsley Library Equipment company from California will be giving away a brand new book return valued at $4500.00 to the winner. The winner’s photo doesn’t have to be the ugliest, just has to have the most likes. There are only 6 entries, thus far and wouldn’t it be great if a Nebraska Library won!
Click on this link: http://www.facebook.com/kingsleylibraryequipment/app_343443465714045?ref=ts and then log into Facebook and vote!~
If for some reason, this link does not work, all you have to do is log into your Facebook account and find the Kingsley Library Equipment Fan Page, go to their Ugly Book Return Contest and like the Hartington Public Library photo.
We have been getting votes all summer and our library was in 1st place (by 45 votes), but now as of today we are 5 votes behind. After you vote, feel to share this link/site all you Facebook Friends! Your support would be great appreciated!
Thanks again,
Tami Anderson

Announcing Technology Planning Summer Camp 2: Don’t Just Survive, Thrive!
The Nebraska Library Commission is pleased to announce Technology Planning Summer Camp 2: Don’t Just Survive, Thrive!
This 2-day workshop will be held three times across the state:
- August 21-22 – Grand Island, Midtown Holiday Inn
- September 5-6 – Norfolk, Divots Conference Center
- September 11-12 – Ogallala, Quality Inn and Conference Center
We have an exciting program planned – check out the full details, and register, at http://nlcblogs.nebraska.gov/tpsc/
This event will focus on the use of your library’s technology and how to prepare a technology plan for your library that will serve your future needs. You’ll find answers to the following important questions: How will you sustain and maintain the equipment you have? What sorts of training should be planned for both your patrons and your staff? How can you network with other libraries to share knowledge?
You may notice that much of the Agenda is geared towards participants in the Library Broadband Builds Nebraska Communities grant project. However, many of the sessions will be useful to any library – take a look at the Agenda and we’re sure you’ll find something for you. So, we encourage all libraries to attend our Summer Camp, not just grant recipients.
Technology Planning Summer Camp 2 is open to all public libraries in Nebraska. Up to 3 people from each library can attend – library administration, staff, IT support, and board members are invited. Participants who attend all sessions will receive 9.5 CE Credits.
Funding for this event is being provided by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in conjunction with the BTOP grant, Library Broadband Builds Nebraska Communities.
Register today for this exciting learning opportunity!

Cool Library Infographic
It seems infographics are all the rage these days. You see them (both good & bad) all over the web and in publications like Wired, Time, Newsweek, the New York Times, USA Today, and others. Well, you can see a fine example of a data visualization being used for library advocacy at this site: http://www.ala.org/research/plftas/2011_2012/weatheringthestorm. It’s based on data from the 2011-2012 Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study I wrote about earlier on this blog. Take a look! It is cleverly executed.

NCompass Live: Tech Talk with Michael Sauers: ePublish or Bust – Recorded Online Session
In this month’s Tech Talk Michael speaks with Jim Blanton and Phyllis Floyd of the Chesapeake Central Library about their project ePublish or Bust. Two amateurs. One charmingly naïve attempt to write the greatest vampire novel in the history of ever. This project aims to follow their project from inspiration to e-publication and everything in between. It will also chronicle the dynamic services the Chesapeake Public Library will be launching to help out budding authors. So, if you’ve ever wondered what it takes to write a novel, what’s involved in epublishing today, and how public libraries fit into the mix, this is the episode for you.
In this monthly feature of NCompass Live, the NLC’s Technology Innovation Librarian, Michael Sauers, will discuss the tech news of the month and share new and exciting tech for your library. There will also be plenty of time in each episode for you to ask your tech questions. So, bring your questions with you, or send them in ahead of time, and Michael will have your answers.

NCompass Live: Contextual Outreach: Making the Library Matter – Recorded Online Session
Amy Mather will share how she is using contextual outreach to connect with the patrons at Omaha Public Library. Imagine that you are flipping through a magazine and you pause at an advertisement-now pause and think about why. That advertisement means something to you. In order to effectively market library services, we need to figure out how we create those pauses. The pauses or “connections” are created when we listen to our patrons and figure out how to market our collections and services to them.

Participate in Voter Voices with NET
Nebraska Public Television and Radio (NET) staff, in partnership with the Nebraska Library Commission, are gathering the thoughts, perspective, and questions of the public this election year. Bill Kelly from NET visited Broken Bow to record a round table discussion with local citizens and Grand Island Public Library recently started to participate in this “NET Campaign Connection 2012: Voter Voices” project. This is a unique opportunity for library users to make use of a webcam computer to voice the important issues during this campaign season. (Seen on TheIndependent.com at http://www.theindependent.com/news/local/library-celebrating-national-library-week/article_f6f0032c-8256-11e1-9661-001a4bcf887a.html and SandhillsExpress.com http://sandhillsexpress.com/BuySell/BuySellDetails/tabid/108/ArticleId/5063/Nebraska-Public-Television-Radio-Voters-Voices.aspx..)
Citizens are invited to sit at the computer with a webcamera, state their name, and ask questions of the candidates or comment on issues important to them or to their communty. This is a great way to motivate people in your community to come into the library and use the library public computer center–participating in this exciting digital democracy project. See netNebraska.org/votervoices for more information. Libraries with public computer centers can contact Mary Jo Ryan, 800-307-2665, if you are interested in participating. Are you ready for your close-up?

National Library Week, April 8-14: You belong @ your library
You belong @ your library as libraries transform lives through technological literacy. Communities across the Nebraska are celebrating the valuable contributions of our state’s libraries during National Library Week, April 8 – 14. This year’s National Library Week theme is “You belong @ your library,” and libraries are offering programs and services that showcase technology and educational resources.
Libraries are transforming lives by providing patrons the tools and skills needed to compete and thrive in a 21st century marketplace. Libraries continue to provide traditional resources and services, but now customers will find bookshelves among computer labs and wireless environments. Nebraska libraries are becoming technology hubs that thousands turn to and depend on for technological literacy resources, including free computer and software workshops, employment databases and free access to digital media.
Libraries continue to enhance traditional services with technology resources. “As technology continues to shape commerce, education and social interaction, libraries play a key role in leveling the playing field for their users,” said American Library Association (ALA) President Molly Raphael. “Libraries are transforming lives through education and lifelong learning, as free technology programs provide patrons with the tech skills needed to enhance economic opportunities and help communities thrive.”
For more information about how libraries use National Library Week to get the word out about library services and technology resources, see http://www.ala.org/news/pr?id=10020. What are you doing in your library this week? Comment below in the box below “Leave a Reply” to share information about the activities in your library.

NCompass Live: Turning Your Library Around – Recorded Online Session
When we started at the South Sioux City Public Library two years ago the library was having difficult times. Circulation and attendance numbers were down. The public’s opinion of the library was not positive. In two years’ time period we have seen an increase of circulation from 21000 items to over 40000 items. We have seen attendance numbers for youth climb from 2000 to 6000 and adult attendance has gone from 800 participants to over 3000 participants. This presentation will tell what we did to turn the program around. Presenters: David Mixdorf, Dan Nieman, Odessa Meyer, South Sioux City Public Library.
