Friday Reads: Altamont

altamont-coverIt would be a gross understatement to say that Joel Selvin’s Altamont provides a mere description of the events leading up to and during the Altamont music festival (December 6, 1969). The San Francisco music critic provides much deeper coverage, including the overall music culture at the time, the Woodstock festival, the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead, and the lives of musicians and managers that were involved in these and other music events in the late 1960’s. And the other major player at Altamont, the Hells Angels.

The organizers of the Altamont festival, which was plugged as “Woodstock West”, unfortunately learned very few of the lessons that came from Woodstock. Altamont was largely a project put together by the Rolling Stones and other assorted handlers that included the Grateful Dead, and was in the end a semi-functional disaster. The Rolling Stones hadn’t toured since 1966, partly due to travel restrictions because of drug charges, and were in a financial crisis so to speak. So in November of 1969 the Stones began touring the U.S., playing large sold-out arenas with ticket prices outside of the norm (and also subsequently skipping from town to town without paying their hotel and travel bills). Altamont was supposed to be the answer to media and fan criticism of the Stones’ high ticket prices, but there were a few other factors at play in their decision to engage in a large scale concert. For one, the Stones weren’t at Woodstock, so there was perhaps an effort for something similar to make their mark (think grand scale). Secondly, the concert, although free to those attending, was always about the money. Perhaps not for a band like the Grateful Dead, but definitely for the Stones. For instance, Selvin describes one of the contributors to the chaos of the event being the multiple changes of venue. At one point, the Sears Point Raceway (now Sonoma Raceway) was selected and theoretically would have been a much better choice for the event than Altamont (after the organizers failed to obtain a permit to hold the event at Golden Gate Park). However, the Sears Point owners requested cash up front and film distribution rights, and the Stones weren’t willing to give that up. In the long run, it would have been well worth it.

In addition to the Stones, the lineup for the Altamont concert included Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the Grateful Dead (although due to increased violence throughout the day of the event, the Dead decided not to play). With the last minute change in venue, one of the problems with the event was the fact that the stage could not be properly erected (and therefore lacked a natural barrier between the musicians and the mixture of LSD, amphetamines, and cheap wine that laced the crowd). The stage stood less than four feet high (compared with 15 feet at Woodstock). Added to the logistical difficulties were huge amount of traffic, inadequate roads, and the lack of other essentials such as food, water, and facilities (yes, those kinds of facilities). Finally (and perhaps most importantly), due to a distrust of the cops, at the suggestion of Jefferson Airplane, the Stones hired no security for the event other than paying the Hells Angels $500 worth of beer (on a truck with ice) in exchange for the Angels agreement to hang out in front and keep the spectators off the stage. And as we all know, the Hells Angels ain’t no cops (especially when they are spending the entire day and night drinking free ice cold beer). The scene at Altamont reeked of trouble from the start, as Selvin offers this depiction of Santana (the first band of the day) beginning to play:

“Santana drummer Michael Shrieve sensed the fog of evil as soon as he settled behind his kit and looked around. The stage felt claustrophobic and the audience packed up against it as tightly as they could. He saw one particularly menacing Hells Angel called Animal, who was wearing a coyote skin as a headdress—the flattened, dried-out head of the long-dead animal hanging grotesquely over his forehead. Something felt wrong from the start. … The Angels waded into the crowd flailing pool cues another half dozen times during the band’s forth-five-minute set, chasing down a hippie photographer who refused to give up his film, smacking around some freaked-out kid trying to escape by climbing onto the stage.”

All said and done, the casualties at Altamont included four deaths, numerous beatings at the hands of the Angels, and general bad vibes. Selvin paints an intriguing and engaging portrait of the events leading up to and during Altamont, as well as the major players. If you have any interest in the historical events of the late 1960’s, the Rolling Stones, or the rock musicians from San Francisco scene during that time, this is an easy and interesting read.

October is Health Literacy Month

healthliteracyDiscover ways your library can encourage health literacy in your community

Health literacy is bigger than any one person, profession or program. It takes all of us working together to improve health understanding. That includes those who are working at, overseeing and visiting public libraries.

I have been focused on health literacy for many years, bringing to this field my experience as a clinician, training as an educator and perspective as a patient. From all these perspectives it is clear there is much work yet to do when it comes to clearly communicating about health. Your library can help. Here are some ways:

For those working at public libraries:

    • You are at the very center of the intersection of health information and the public’s desire to learn. Your skills are key to helping patrons find relevant, readable, credible, up-to-date health resources. I hope your library offers an array of materials, including some that do not require a lot of reading or advanced computer skills. These can include resources such as videos, pictures, models and interactive games.
  • You also might help patrons find the right words for health questions and searches. An example is helping patrons bridge the gap between complex, multisyllabic, technical terms (like “myocardial infarction”) with more common and simpler lay words (such as “heart attack”).

For those overseeing libraries:

    • Ideally you already are, or soon will be, a “health literacy champion.” As a well-known and well-respected leader, you can help by introducing peers, staff and others to health literacy. Share credible data and compelling stories about why health literacy matters. Highlight how health literacy can help improve health outcomes and reduce medical costs when patients and their caregivers truly understand a new diagnosis, self-care plan and emergency instructions. You might also make clear potential costs to individuals and communities when this type of understanding does not occur.
  • Consider joining or starting a regional coalition of health literacy advocates. This is a great way to broaden the message, perhaps by partnering with healthcare facilities, community services, local and state government, literacy programs, schools and business leaders. Decide what goals to address now, or later. One could be to host a Health Literacy Month event, teaching others about the value of health understanding.

For those visiting libraries:

    • We likely all have had the experience of being a patient or caring for someone who is. Sometimes this experience can be frustrating, such as when a clinician uses unfamiliar, technical words and doesn’t take time to explain what those words mean. Happily, sometimes our healthcare experiences are good, like when a clinician shows (not just tells us) how to use a new medical device. Even better is when this clinician watches while we try using this device on our own. These experiences, both bad and good, can serve as important reminders about why health literacy matters.
    • Learn ways to communicate clearly about your own health. One way is by bringing a list of questions to each medical appointment. Think ahead about which are most important. Along with my prioritized list, I bring a pen to write down the clinician’s answers. Another communication tip is to confirm you correctly understand directions. For instance, if the clinician says to take this new medicine with food, find out exactly what that means. Should you eat a big meal first and then take the pill? Or is it enough to nibble on a cracker when taking the medicine? I confirm directions by saying something to the clinician like, “I want to make sure I understood. When you said to take this medicine with food, does this mean that I should _____________?”
  • Since this article is about public libraries, another tip is to learn all you want to know about your health situation. But please don’t feel like you have to study everything. A few years ago I was being treated for something serious (happily, I’m fine now). I surprised even myself by not wanting to read more about my diagnosis. But a friend dealt with her illness quite differently and every night found comfort in doing lots of research. My lesson learned is that there is no one “right” or “wrong” way when it comes to learning about health. And really, that’s fine.

Health Literacy Month is a time for organizations and individuals to promote the importance of understandable health information. This annual, worldwide, awareness-raising event has been going strong ever since Helen Osborne founded it in 1999. Digitized and Free to Read Online : Archive of 6,000 Historical Children’s Books

Book 1We can learn much about how a historical period viewed the abilities of its children by studying its children’s literature. Occupying a space somewhere between the purely didactic and the nonsensical, most children’s books published in the past few hundred years have attempted to find a line between the two poles, seeking a balance between entertainment and instruction. However, that line seems to move closer to one pole or another depending on the prevailing cultural sentiments of the time. And the very fact that children’s books were hardly published at all before the early 18th century tells us a lot about when and how modern ideas of childhood as a separate category of existence began.

“By the end of the 18th century,” writes Newcastle University professor M.O. Grenby, Book 2“children’s literature was a flourishing, separate and secure part of the publishing industry in Britain.” The trend accelerated rapidly and has never ceased—children’s and young adult books now drive sales in publishing (with 80% of YA books bought by grown-ups for themselves). Grenby notes that “the reasons for this sudden rise of children’s literature” and its rapid expansion into a booming market by the early 1800s “have never been fully explained.” We are free to speculate about the social and pedagogical winds that pushed this historical change.

Book 3Or we might do so, at least, by examining the children’s literature of the Victorian era, perhaps the most innovative and diverse period for children’s literature thus far by the standards of the time. And we can do so most thoroughly by surveying the thousands of mid- to late 19th century titles at the University of Florida’s Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature. Their digitized collection currently holds over 6,000 books free to read online from cover to cover, allowing you to get a sense of what adults in Britain and the U.S. wanted children to know and believe.

 

Several genres flourished at the time: religious instruction, naturally, but also language Book 4and spelling books, fairy tales, codes of conduct, and, especially, adventure stories—pre-Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew examples of what we would call young adult fiction, these published principally for boys. Adventure stories offered a (very colonialist) view of the wide world; in series like the Boston-published Zig Zag and English books like Afloat with Nelson, both from the 1890s, fact mingled with fiction, natural history and science with battle and travel accounts. But there is another distinctive strain in the children’s literature of the time, one which to us—but not necessarily to the Victorians—would seem contrary to the imperialist young adult novel.

Book 5For most Victorian students and readers, poetry was a daily part of life, and it was a central instructional and storytelling form in children’s lit. The A.L.O.E.’s Bible Picture Book from 1871, above, presents “Stories from the Life of Our Lord in Verse,” written “simply for the Lord’s lambs, rhymes more readily than prose attracting the attention of children, and fastening themselves on their memories.” Children and adults regularly memorized poetry, after all. Yet after the explosion in children’s publishing the former readers were often given inferior examples of it. The author of the Bible Picture Book admits as much, begging the indulgence of older readers in the preface for “defects in my work,” given that “the verses were made for the pictures, not the pictures for the verses.”

This is not an author, or perhaps a type of literature, one might suspect, that thinks highly Book 6of children’s aesthetic sensibilities.  We find precisely the opposite to be the case in the wonderful Elfin Rhymes from 1900, written by the mysterious “Norman” with “40 drawings by Carton Moorepark.” Whoever “Norman” may be (or why his one-word name appears in quotation marks), he gives his readers poems that might be mistaken at first glance for unpublished Christina Rossetti verses; and Mr. Moorepark’s illustrations rival those of the finest book illustrators of the time, presaging the high quality of Caldecott Medal-winning books of later decades. Elfin Rhymes seems like a rare oddity, likely published in a small print run; the care and attention of its layout and design shows a very high opinion of its readers’ imaginative capabilities.

Book 7This title is representative of an emerging genre of late Victorian children’s literature, which still tended on the whole, as it does now, to fall into the trite and formulaic. Elfin Rhymes sits astride the fantasy boom at the turn of the century, heralded by hugely popular books like Frank L. Baum’s Wizard of Oz series and J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. These, the Harry Potters of their day, made millions of young people passionate readers of modern fairy tales, representing a slide even further away from the once quite narrow, “remorselessly instructional… or deeply pious” categories available in early writing for children, as Grenby points out.

Where the boundaries for kids’ literature had once been Book 8narrowly fixed by Latin grammar books and Pilgrim’s Progress, by the end of the 19th century, the influence of science fiction like Jules Verne’s, and of popular supernatural tales and poems, prepared the ground for comic books, YA dystopias, magician fiction, and dozens of other children’s literature genres we now take for granted, or—in increasingly large numbers—we buy to read for ourselves. Together we will examine issues of literacy, health literacy, and the health information needs of special populations. From there we will explore authoritative resources for just about any type of health question, apps and mobile health technologies, how people are using social networking for health questions, and how to create fun and informative health-related programming for different populations in your community. National Library of Medicine New Director

NLMLogoOn September 12, 2016, Dr. Patricia Flatley Brennan will be sworn in as the new Director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM). You can read about Dr. Brennan’s credentials and accomplishments and watch a video about her vision for the NLM on the NLM in Focus blog. The 3-minute video highlights a number of roles the NLM plays in advancing health, many of which can be extrapolated to apply to local libraries as well. Government Publication Resources in Languages Other Than English

GovDocsDo you have newly arrived immigrants or refugees in your community?  Do you need to find government-published resources that might be helpful, especially in other languages?

Following is a list of resources:

 

1. Search USA.GOV for Spanish Language Publications.  You can change usa.gov to the Spanish language version:   Gobierno.usa.gov

Or, link directly to the usa.gov consumer order site for free and low cost government publications.  Scroll down under the categories tab and click on the red “español” button.  Many of these publications are in pdf format for download. The section “programas federales” has a variety of social security brochures and 2 publications on immigration.

2. Also try Limited English Proficiency for multiple sources of information in other languages

3. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration — This is a link for ordering Spanish language mental health printed or .pdf publications from SAMHSA.

4. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Foreign Language Resources Many different resources in a wide range of languages to choose from.  There is also an excellent Citizenship Toolkit published by the GPO. Click on other languages for resources in Spanish and Chinese plus other languages.

5. Federal Trade Commission — Link to bulk order publications in Spanish from the FTC.

6. Link to consumer order site for free and low cost government publications.  Scroll down under the categories tab and click on the red “español” button.  Many of these publications are in pdf format for download. 7. The entire CDC (Centers for Disease Control) site can be changed to Spanish and has excellent health information.

Federal Trade Commission Raises Awareness About Scams

The stories are based on complaints to the FTC from Spanish speakers throughout the nation and offer practical tips to help detect and stop common scams. Nebraska DMV Announces Launch of Online Change-of-Address Service

DMVThe Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has launched a significant enhancement to an existing online service making it easier for Nebraskans to do business with the state of Nebraska. Holders of Nebraska driver’s licenses and IDs can now update their address online from their computer, tablet, or phone. In two weeks, 1,100 drivers have already used the application, reflecting unprecedented success.

Launched on June 28, 2016, Nebraskans can comply with the statutory requirement to update their address within 60 days of moving. Using the new enhancement, they can provide the documents necessary to prove their address and circumvent the necessity to make a trip to a driver’s license office.

“We realize many of our customers want and need to do business with us outside of traditional business hours. We respect their time and were able remove this barrier to the online driver license renewal/replacement process,” stated DMV Director Rhonda Lahm. “This is one more way we can assist Nebraskans to interact with the DMV services they need in the most convenient manner possible.”

The Driver License Renewal/Replacement online application with the Change of Address capability can be found by going to http://www.clickDMV.nebraska.gov. Two types of documentation are required to prove an address; 14 different options exist. After documents are submitted, they are reviewed for approval by DMV driver licensing staff to approve valid documentation.

“This service will allow our customers who need a relatively simple transaction to get their business completed at a time which is convenient to them,” says Sara O’Rourke, Driver License Administrator for the DMV. “This accommodates the largest number of persons possible and promotes efficient use of our DMV services for our citizens.”

The online application was developed by Nebraska Interactive, LLC. “We are excited to add a new enhancement which saves constituents time and creates more effective and efficient government services,” stated Brent Hoffman, President of Nebraska Interactive.

Nebraska 150 Books : July 2016 Featured Titles

NE150Books (2)Summer in Nebraska provides a rich environment for authors to reflect on the agriculture and natural phenomena of the Great Plains.  The featured books for July highlight the magestic aspects of Nebraska’s land and climate:  thunderstorms, endless corn fields, big sky, and all of the creatures that are native to this land.

Fiction: Haven’s Wake, by Ladette Randolph.  Early July, and the corn in eastern Nebraska stands ten feet tall; after a near-decade of drought, it seems too good to be true, and everyone is watching the sky for trouble. For the Grebels, whose plots of organic crops trace a modest patchwork among the vast fields of soybeans and corn, trouble arrives from a different quarter in the form of Elsa’s voice on her estranged son’s answering machine: “Your father’s dead. You’ll probably want to come home.”

When a tractor accident fells the patriarch of this Mennonite family, the threads holding them together are suddenly drawn taut, singing with the tensions of a lifetime’s worth of love and faith, betrayal and shame. Through the competing voices of those gathered for Haven Grebel’s funeral, acts of loyalty and failures, long-suppressed resentments and a tragic secret are brought to light, expressing a larger, complex truth.   University of Nebraska Press, and 2014 Nebraska Book Award for Fiction.

Non-Fiction: Keith County Journal, by John Janovy, Jr.    To learn from nature, not about nature, was the imperative that took John Janovy Jr. and his students into the sandhills, marshes, grasslands, canyons, lakes, and streams of Keith County in western Nebraska. The biologist explores the web of interrelationships among land, animals, and human beings. Even termites, snails, and barn swallows earn respect and assume significance in the overall scheme of things. Janovy, reminiscent of Henry David Thoreau in his acute powers of observation and search for wisdom, has written a new foreword for this Bison Books/University of Nebraska Press edition.

Children’s Literature: Night of the Twisters, by Ivy Ruckman.    When a tornado watch is issued one Tuesday evening in June, twelve-year-old Dan Hatch and his best friend, Arthur, don’t think much of it. After all, tornado warnings are a way of life during the summer in Grand Island, Nebraska. But soon enough, the wind begins to howl, and the lights and telephone stop working. Then the emergency siren starts to wail. Dan, his baby brother, and Arthur have only seconds to get to the basement before the monstrous twister is on top of them. Little do they know that even if they do survive the storm, their ordeal will have only just begun. . . .

Poetry:  Nebraska : This Place, These People, by former Nebraska State Poet William (Bill) Kloefkorn.  This 128-page poetry collection is filled with more than 80 of Kloefkorn’s superbly-crafted accounts of prairie and city life. This is the only book in Kloefkorn’s distinguished writing career devoted entirely to Nebraska. It’s infused with beautiful hand-drawn illustrations, plus excerpts from other great Nebraska writers such as Willa Cather and John Neihardt, offering insight into Kloefkorn’s vision, inspiration and adoration of our amazing state.

                                                                                             Firearm Laws in Nebraska–A Legislative Research Office BackgrounderCoverL3800B039-2016 provides an overview of laws  governing firearms in Nebraska. It also describes federal firearm laws to the extent they constitute a framework for state law.

Firearms are governed by myriad laws at the state and federal level. For purposes of this Backgrounder, we focus on laws pertaining to buying handguns, carrying concealed handguns, criminal history background checks, and the role of federally licensed firearms dealers. We also provide a reference guide to Nebraska’s other firearms laws, a chronology of significant federal law, and supplemental firearms information in a “Q and A” format.

This Backgrounder is not intended to take a position on the ownership, possession, sale, or use of firearms—issues many find polarizing—nor to offer legal advice. In writing this report, we have endeavored to be neutral on firearms while providing information during a time when the debate over firearms has intensified.

As evidence, at least 20 proposals pertaining to firearms were pending before the Legislature in 2016. (A list of the proposals can be found in Appendix B.) We hope senators and the public, in debating firearm issues, will find the information contained in this report to be a useful, introductory guide to Nebraska’s firearm laws.

The content of this report relies on state and federal laws and supplemental material produced by the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

In addition, several individuals aided our understanding of the nuances of firearm laws. In particular, we would like to thank Nebraska State Patrol Captain Mike Jahnke and Jeff Avey, records analysis supervisor, criminal identification division of the patrol.

IdentityTheft.gov : Recovering from identity theft is easier with a plan…

IdentityTheft.govWhere do identity theft victims turn for help?  For many, it’s the same place they turn whenever they’re stumped — their local library.  They know a librarian will find the right resource to help them recover from a crime that affects millions of people every year.  IdentityTheft.gov is that resource, a free government site to report identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission, build a step-by-step personalized recovery plan, and put that plan into action.

 

How it works:

Go to IdentityTheft.gov and answer some questions about what happened.  The site will:

  1. Build your customized recovery plan
  2. Walk you through each recovery step
  3. Track your progress and adapt to your changing situation
  4. Pre-fill letters and forms that you can use to deal with businesses, debt collectors, and even the IRS.

How libraries can use IdentityTheft.gov:

  1. Use it to give your patrons advice.  If your library has a secure network, help them report the theft and and open an account.  If not, give them an IdentityTheft.gov fact sheet and suggest they visit the site from a secure network or using their mobile phone’s cellular data.
  2. Order free bookmarks and factsheets!  Visit FTC.gov Bulkorder and order as many bookmarks and fact sheets as you need for FREE.
  3. Visit FTC.gov/libraries.  Get more consumer tips and tools; they’re free and in the public domain.  You can use the content in your library’s newsletters, share them online, and even put your library’s logo and branding on them.

History of Armed Forces Day

ArmedForces DayThis past Saturday, May 21st was Armed Forces Day.   In the United States, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. It falls near the end of Armed Forces Week, which begins on the second Saturday of May and ends on the third Sunday of May (the fourth if the month begins on a Sunday, as in 2016).

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.  First observed on 20 May 1950, the day was created on 31 August 1949 by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson, to honor Americans serving in the five U.S. military branches – the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard – following the consolidation of the military services in the U.S. Department of Defense. It was intended to replace the separate Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Days, but the separate days are still observed, especially within the respective services.

The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated by parades, open houses, receptions and air shows. The United States’ longest continuously running Armed Forces Day Parade is held in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2016, Chattanooga celebrated the 67th year of the Armed Forces Day Parade, which also began in 1950.
