Sign Up for ‘Money Smart Week @ your library’, April 20-27, 2013
Please join the hundreds of libraries across the country that will be providing financial literacy programming during Money Smart Week @ your library, April 20-27.
Libraries of all types can provide much needed financial education to their communities- pubic, school, academic, special. Last year over 250 libraries in 39 states participated. We are hoping to double the number of libraries this year, and have participation in each state.
ALA and the Federal Reserve Bank (Chicago) have partnered to make it easy for you to participate, with toolkits, great program ideas, guides, resources, downloadable logos and more. And we don’t ask you to do a lot, you can participate if you only provide one program during the week.
To learn more about ‘Money Smart Week @ your library’ and how other libraries have benefited from being part of Money Smart Week @ your library take a look at this recent
archived webinar which you can view at your leisure (55 minutes).
Please feel free to pass the link to the webinar link to any colleagues who you would like to also encourage to participate.
If you and your library would like to participate we ask that should register as a ‘Library Partner’ at the
Money Smart Week website –
http://www.moneysmartweek.org/ala. Please register by January 2nd if possible.
And don’t forget to also sign up for the Money Smart Week @ your library discussion list, where we provide updates and you can ask questions of other participating librarians.

To Librarians:
Here’s another event you can add to your Money Smart Week activities. The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago has created an nationwide photo scavenger hunt. It just begun so a great way to get some more promotion and participation in Money Smart Week.
Money Smart Week® Goes Scavenger Hunting Via Mobile Devices
The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Money Smart Week announces the start of the Money Smart Hunt, a free, nationwide, photojournalistic, scavenger hunt promoting financial literacy. The Money Smart Hunt is running now through Saturday, April 27.
Participants can join the hunt by downloading the Scavenger Hunt with Friends mobile app and begin to upload creative photos from the list of tasks that require participants to demonstrate how they are financially savvy. Some examples of tasks include taking a picture illustrating use of energy efficient light bulbs or turning down the thermostat at home, and activities such as visiting a money management website or attending a financial seminar.
The scavenger hunt is part of the Chicago Fed’s annual Money Smart Week , which is a public awareness campaign designed to promote financial literacy across all age groups. More than 2,500 free financial literacy programs are offered nationwide during the week on topics ranging from budgeting to saving for college and retirement.
Launched in 2002, the program is now active in more than 41 states through national partnerships with the American Library Association and the Financial Planners Association. New 2013 national partners include the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) Cooperative Extension and the Certified Financial Planners Board of Standards. Beyond national partners, events are coordinated and hosted by hundreds of local partner organizations including banks, universities, government, community groups and libraries. For the most up to date calendar of events, please visit http://www.moneysmartweek.org.
“The Money Smart Hunt is an attempt to appeal to a younger, more tech savvy audience that typically do not attend financial literacy classes,” said Money Smart Week spokesman, Alejo Torres. “By making learning fun through the app, we hope people who play the game will at the very least give some thought about how they can be more money smart.”
