#BookFaceFriday “A Sister’s Memories”
#BookFaceFriday just loves a book with ties to the Good Life.
If you’re in the mood for a fascinating non-fiction read check out the Nebraska Book Award-winning historical biography “A Sister’s Memories: The Life and Work of Grace Abbott from the Writings of Her Sister, Edith Abbott” edited by John Sorensen (University of Chicago Press, 2015).
“Grace Abbott emerged as one of the leading reformers of her generation. Studious, committed, and experienced, she worked with recent immigrants through Hull House in Chicago, headed the Children’s Bureau, and assisted in the crafting of New Deal legislation. This lightly edited volume, compiled from the notes and partially written chapters of her sister Edith, provides some insights about the motivation and dedication with which she undertook this work. Edith Abbott was an accomplished social welfare worker in her own right, and intended to publish a book to ensure that her sister’s contributions would be remembered. She included personal anecdotes about their childhood in Nebraska, their years spent in Chicago, and correspondence from Grace’s long service with the Children’s Bureau. . . . Recommended.”(Choice)

#BookFaceFriday “Prodigal Summer”
It’s a jungle out there, #BookFaceFriday fans!
Can’t you just feel the heat radiating from this rain forest setting? Oh, wait, that’s just the local weather! Set over the course of a particularly humid summer, Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver (Harper Perennial, 2000) “weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives inhabiting the forested mountains and struggling small farms of southern Appalachia.” This title is a part of our NLC Book Club Kit collection, along with several other titles by Kingsolver. It seemed like a perfect choice for this week’s bookface, as our local flora and fauna thrive (while the rest of us wilt) in the current heat and humidity!

#BookFaceFriday “Lemons”
When life gives you lemons, we make #BookFace!
NLC’s #BookFaceFriday is joining forces with Nebraska’s Reading Classic Committee! Reading Classics is a statewide competition that promotes and encourages Nebraska Schools to form teams and recognize outstanding young readers. They just launched a friendly #BookFace competition as students await the new 2019-2020 reading list. “Lemons” by Melissa Savage (Yearling, 2018). It’s one of the 10 nominated titles for the 2019-2020 Golden Sower Chapter Books list!

The Nebraska Reading Classic Committee chooses books for the reading list for each Division with input from coaches, team members, and many other sources. We snapped this week’s #BookFace while members of the committee were discussing titles to add or remove for the 2020 reading list. Specifically the 2019-2020 Golden Sower nominees.

If the sight of a red cable knit cardigan brings a smile to your face, and our opening line has a jingle playing in your mind, this is the book for you. “The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers” by Maxwell King (Harry N. Abrams, 2018). It’s a New York Times bestseller and the 2018 Goodreads Choice Award Winner for History & Biography. This book is a part of our NLC Book Club Kit collection and I can’t think of a better way to add some nonfiction to a book club!

Libraries = Strong Communities is this year’s theme and nothing could be truer. What can you do to help your community celebrate? Get out to your library, sign up for a library card, tell someone what you love about your library, and tell your local library staff how much you appreciate them! It’s that easy. #BookFaceFriday “Gossamer”
Have you been dreaming of #BookFaceFriday?

I’ve always loved the way Lois Lowry writes. To me, it’s almost lyrical, and the vocabulary she chooses always makes me smile. #BookFace this week is “Gossamer” by Lois Lowry (Yearling, 2008). #BookFaceFriday “Songs of the Humpback Whale”

While we didn’t see any whales off the coast of Puerto Rico, we did take advantage of the beach for this week’s #BookFaceFriday “Songs of the Humpback Whale: A Novel in Five Voices” by Jodi Picoult (Washington Square Press, 1992). This familial drama between a disgruntled wife and her renowned oceanographer husband plays out in a cross country road trip. #BookFaceFriday “Running With Scissors”
I’d hate to have a Freudian slip with this #BookFace…
