MySpace is Your Library’s Space….in Second Life

A crowd of almost 50 people, including 2 NLC Network Services staff members, enjoyed the debut lecture in Cybrary City in the virtual world of Second Life. Angela Semifero (known as Semife Roar in Second Life), Deputy Director and Head of Technical Services at the Marshall District Library (Marshall, MI), gave the presentation, MySpace is Your Library’s Space!: Reference, Programming and Promotion. Cybrary City is a part of Info Island/Second Life Library services, and provides a space for participating libraries to showcase their local resources. Presenter Semife Roar Presenter Semife Roar. The crowd The audience. Semife’s entertaining and educational talk was a big hit. MySpace is a great resource to help bring users to your library. Some people in your area on MySpace may have never set foot in their local library, or may not know about all the services you offer. You can use MySpace to promote special events, classes, book discussions, and to solicit feedback from your users. According to Reuters, MySpace has at various points in the past year been the most visited United States website on the Internet, beating out even Google and Yahoo. Your library can be there, too!     I likes the example myspace profiles int he powerpoint- role playing Virginia Woolf and George Orwell! That sounds like a great project to give a middle schooler, and a lot more fun than a book report.
