Throwback Thursday: Mitchell City Hall

Happy #ThrowbackThursday!

This week’s highlight is a 7-1/8″ x 5″ black and white photograph that pictures Mitchell City Hall, a two-story rectangular brick building sitting on a corner with multiple entrances. At the narrow end, a sign over the entry says, “City Hall.” Over the far left entry on the long side of the building is a sign that says, “Fire Department.” However, the arched doorways for fire wagons or engines have been converted to conventional doors–one all glass with a single door and one bricked in except for a door and two small windows. The photo is dated around 1970-1975. The Mitchell City Hall was built in 1922 and, at one time, housed the library on the second floor.

This image is published and owned by the Mitchell Public Library. Local historian Jane Hills Bowman collected pictures and stories about Mitchell’s early years. Her collection includes street scenes from the early 1900s that are some of the earliest images of Mitchell’s business district. The collection also contains photographs of Mitchell’s first public school buildings.
