Take a look at this #ThrowbackThursday!

This week’s highlight is a 14 x 9 cm sepia-toned postcard with an exterior view of the western and northern sides of the Burlington railroad depot at 925 South 10th Street in Omaha, Nebraska. This is a partial view of the front facade of the building.

Burlington station, just south of Union Station on 10th Street, was designed by Thomas Rogers Kimball. The $350,000 Indiana limestone structure was finished just in time for the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Expo. The 10th Street entrance boasted 28 columns, each weighing 18,000 pounds. The interior iron staircase was patterned after a French Chateau. A $1 million renovation in 1930 removed the columns, creating a more classical style. The columns are now on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus near Memorial Stadium. The station was closed in 1971 and has remained vacant.
