Summer Reading Programs: Who Chooses the Theme?
The Collaborative Summer Reading Program (CSLP) began in 1987 when ten Minnesota regional library systems developed a summer library program for children. It has grown to a consortium of 47 states working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children at the lowest cost possible for their public libraries. Join Sally Snyder, the NLC’s Coordinator of Children and Young Adult Library Services, and the current CSLP President, to learn all about how the CSLP works.

Perkins Library Awesomeness

Hastings College Perkins Library held a video contest in honor of National Library Week 2009. In keeping with the national theme “Worlds connect at your library,” students, faculty and staff were asked to submit videos that illustrated how they use Perkins Library to connect to their worlds. The winner, “I’m Yours Perkins” by Stacie Sawyer and Kelsey Knehans, is a love song, which spoofs Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours.” The song/video pays tribute to the many ways Perkins Library allows its patrons to connect to the world, including keeping up on Brangelina and finding out who Rick Astley is. The winning video is posted below. Other entries, all of which may be accessed at http://www.youtube.com/user/HCPerkinsLibrary were:

  • “The Great Escape” by Stephen Cannon, Michael Fahrenbruch and Mike Merryman (Team Awesome). A student is accidentally trapped in the library and must find a way to connect to the world or lose his mind. Does he succeed? You have to watch it to find out.
  • “38 Seconds to Connect” by Sara Tall and Anna Mullen (with assist by Leah Olson). An illustration, in thirty-eight seconds, of the myriad ways in which the world can be accessed via Perkins Library. Do you know them all?
  • “Terror at Perkins Library” by Emily Spearman, Kellie Bate and Nick Henline. Pancrazyo, a crazed plumber, terrorizes students at Perkins Library. Happy ending? Watch and see.

Dummies LogoIn other exciting news, Perkins Library is proud to have been named 1st Runner up in Wiley Publishing Company’s “For Dummies” Library Display contest. Hastings College’s motto “Pursue Your Passion” was integrated into our display, which featured photos of students, faculty and staff donning the Dummy’s googly eyes and oversized pointy finger. To view photos of their award-winning display, go to http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=70979&id=589583541&l=f5e08c54db. For photos of all entries, go to http://s543.photobucket.com/albums/gg468/DummiesLibraryContest09/ (And please note that it’s hard to beat a guy dressed as a bee! Paulding County Carnegie Library, we salute you and bow down to your rightful place as first place winner!) Perkins Library will receive 40 For Dummies books of our choice; a trophy; a pizza party for our staff; and a prize box filled with Dummies items. Special thanks to sophomores Anna Mullen and Sara Tall, chief masterminds of the display, with help from staff and library assistants and also to the Art Department for the loan of its pedestals.

Participating in the Creative Commons
With the debate over copyright raging, some are calling for the end of the “all rights reserved” regime; schools and libraries are caught in the middle. What are the alternatives? Creative Commons (CC) is the most respected alternative available today with its idea of “some rights reserved” as set by the content creators themselves. This presentation will talk about the principles of Creative Commons, show how you can easily apply it to your intellectual property today, and how you can use CC to find material that you and your patrons can legally reuse in the creation of new content.

Guinness World Records book in school libraries

Posted on behalf of Marjorie Harrison, Coordinator, Panhandle Library System:
Media Specialists from across the state of Nebraska have responded with vehemence to a question about removing the Guinness Book of World Records from an elementary school library. I sent the following question out to the Systems list on Wednesday, January 23:

“Media Specialists: Has any school library in the state of Nebraska ever had a request to remove the Guinness World Records from an elementary school library? In my experience, Guinness World Record books are very popular among young people. Please contact me with any information you may have regarding use of this title in your school library, or complaints that you may have experienced. This information will be very helpful to one of our Nebraska school libraries. Thank you.”

Within two days, more than 100 librarians replied to either me or the SYSTEMS list. Some librarians replied with a quick, “the book is very popular in my library,” while others expressed fascination, surprise, and concern that the Guinness World Records book was being challenged. A few commented on the “distractions” that the book sometimes creates in the library, and some admitted that they no longer purchase the book. The question has impassioned a great many media specialists in Nebraska to speak to the issue of intellectual freedom. Due to the limitations of the Systems list and because most replies were sent directly to me, participants have missed a bulk of the discussion. Let’s continue the discussion here.

The following workshops have been scheduled at the Nebraska Library Commission in January. The instructor is Michael Sauers, Technology Innovation Librarian, Nebraska Library Commission.
Introduction to Web Page Creation with XHTML
Description: Even if you use FrontPage, Dreamweaver, Drupal to Blogger to create your Web site, there’s XHTML under the hood. This six-hour workshop will give you a basic understanding of how the eXtensible HyperText Markup language works and how to create Web pages using it through a hands-on approach. By the end of the day attendees will be able to create new pages from scratch and have a solid foundation on which to build their future Web page creation skills.
Date and Time: January 15, 2009, 9am – 4pm CT
For more information and to register: http://www.nlc.state.ne.us/scripts/training/eventshow.asp?ProgID=8823
Style Your Web Site with CSS
Description: Once you have the content of your Web page written and your markup added, it’s time to add some style. Cascading Style Sheets is the language that gives you the power to make your pages look the way you want them to. CSS also allows you to give your site a consistent look across all of your pages in less code than you’d imagine. Ultimately, designing your Web site using CSS allows you to accomplish more work, in less time, and make your site easier to manage over the long-term. This full-day, hands-on workshop, will give you the basic skills to begin designing professional future-compatible looking Web sites.
Date and Time: January 16, 2009, 9am – 4pm CT

As a result of Library Camp…

There were two specific suggestions that I heard at Library Camp that could be implemented almost immediately: Daily Tech Tips and a Meebo Room. So….
Did you know that the ITART Blog offers a tech tip or product review nearly every weekday morning? Just head on over to http://www.nebraskalibraries.org/ITART/ and check it out. Be sure to subscribe to the RSS feed to make receiving these tips automatic.
A Meebo Room named “Nebraska Librarians” has been created. Feel free to log in to your account at meebo.com, find the room and join us in the continuing conversation. We can’t promise that there will be someone there at all times but you never know who might be around. For a sneak peek you can check out the room right here:

.mcrmeebo { display: block; background:url(“http://widget.meebo.com/r.gif”) no-repeat top right; } .mcrmeebo:hover { background:url(“http://widget.meebo.com/ro.gif”) no-repeat top right; } http://www.meebo.com/rooms

The benefit to getting your own Meebo account is that you get to pick your username. Using the embedded interface here you’ll be listed as guest####.
