The 1940 Census is Coming!

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Genealogical Society and Nebraska State Historical Society are sponsoring a special event to celebrate the the long-awaited release of the 1940 Census.  It will be held Sunday, March 25, 2012 at 1:30 pm at  Bess Dodson Walt Branch Library , 6701 South 14 th  Street, Lincoln, NE. The program is free,  and will feature 1940 exhibits, music and memorabilia and a special presentation by Lori Cox-Paul,  Director of Archival Operations, National Archives at Kansas City entitled “Introduction to the 1940 Census”.

The 1940 Census will be released digitally on April 2, 2012.

      I was really glad to see Devra & Allana at this event–Allana was excellent in addressing a question regarding the 1930 census & Heritage Quest!

    I’m a Norfolk Public Library (Norfolk, NE.) employee.

    I’m interested in knowing whether this 1940 census will ever be
    released in microfilm form. Would someone please email me with
    this particular answer? Thanks so much.

    I thought some other folks might be interested in the answer to Sally’s question about microfilm of the 1940 census. NARA has posted a nice FAQ page that answers this and lots of other questions http://www.archives.gov/research/census/1940/faqs.html The Census will be available free online. The NARA store will also be selling microfilm, which can be purched for the whole country or individual states.

    Q. Is it possible to purchase a copy of the entire 1940 census or of a particular state?
    A. Yes. The National Archives Trust Fund is selling copies of the entire 1940 census as well as copies of individual states in both digital and microfilm format. For more information please visit their web site at

    And the Library Commission has launched a project to scan the white pages of Nebraska phone books. We hope to have a web page up in the next few days, starting with the Lincoln phone book.     A resource you might try if you know names to search on and which city or state to search, would be online telephone directories like the ones listed on this page
